Nursery at Beechwood Primary School

Ladybirds, bees and a carrot uncovered in a planter give Beechwood’s nursery learning a distinctly earthy character. Children explore the nursery garden, and some have helped weed planters in the magic garden. These are concrete opportunities to notice living things and talk about what they discover.
Part of Beechwood Primary School on Kentmere Avenue in Leeds, the nursery accepts place enquiries for the term after a child turns three. In the Ofsted inspection of 11 and 12 February 2025, early years provision received a Good judgement. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play has adult guidance alongside it. In February 2025, adults helped children develop language and movement through their interactions during play. Learning took place both outside and indoors, with activities serving clear purposes. For parents, this means the early years curriculum involves children practising communication and physical skills through what they do, with adults helping them take the next step.
The garden gives that learning a specific setting. Nursery children have searched for signs of new life, noticed bees and ladybirds, and explored their own outdoor space during Earth Day activities. Some also weeded the magic garden’s planters, discovering a worm and a large carrot. Nature becomes something children can investigate directly.
Creative work connects with those experiences. For Earth Day, children discussed caring for the planet and used different materials to make pictures of their ideal gardens. The activity linked making, observation and conversation around a subject they could explore outdoors themselves.
Lunch brings a choice: nursery children can have an optional paid school meal or bring a packed lunch. Families can therefore choose between school catering and food prepared at home. Contact the school for current meal charges.
Support for complex needs deserves careful attention. In February 2025, established learning routines worked for most children, but some children’s individual needs were not understood consistently across staff. Support systems for children with the most complex needs, especially in early years, consequently did not reliably meet their needs. Families should give this concern weight when considering the provision.
For parent support, Beechwood’s SEND information page links to the Leeds Local Offer and the MindMate neurodiversity information hub. It also lists parent workshops, including a sensory workshop, providing routes to information beyond the nursery session.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application, and places are allocated using the school’s admission criteria. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
Beechwood’s guidance for September 2025 entry directed Leeds residents to apply online through Leeds City Council; families living elsewhere applied through their home local authority. That cycle’s deadline was 15 January 2025 and has passed. Use the normal Reception application route and meet the deadline for your child’s entry year.
Three session options make the basic day clear. Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am, afternoons from 12:15pm to 3:15pm, and full days from 8:45am to 3:15pm. These give families distinct starting and finishing points for planning childcare.
The nursery offers sessions using the 15-hour Universal Funding entitlement and the 30-hour Extended Funding entitlement. Its application page directs families to Childcare Choices for entitlement details, while office staff can help with funding queries.
Enquiries go through the school office on 0113 2930250 or office@beechwoodprimaryschool.co.uk, and the nursery application page includes a place-request form. Open-day events include opportunities to meet the nursery team and tour the nursery and outdoor area with your child. Check the school calendar for event dates.
