Nursery at Blenheim Primary School

Sustained play and conversation give Blenheim’s nursery its character. This is the nursery within Blenheim Primary School on Lofthouse Place in Leeds, a school admitting children from age three. At the November 2022 inspection, nursery provision accommodated up to 39 children, with attendance possible for 30 hours each week. Those are historical provision figures, rather than a current booking offer.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding on 22 and 23 November 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Play has time to develop here. In November 2022, early years children remained absorbed in play, gained independence and learned considerate behaviour. Adults helped their learning through conversation, building the ability to listen and express ideas. For a young child, that connects social confidence with learning rather than treating talk as an extra activity.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the curriculum framework for this stage. Blenheim’s early years teaching brings together language, early writing, movement and learning to manage personal needs. Storytelling and discussion help children develop ideas before expressing them in writing. Physical learning includes handling tools, controlling movements and moving safely through space, alongside dressing and using the toilet independently.
Read Write Inc. gives nursery phonics a named structure. Children take part in focused activities involving speech, listening, reading and writing, linking sounds with the beginnings of literacy. The school also provides families with nursery learning resources: counting songs, repeating patterns, shape activities, building and modelling ideas, and nursery rhymes. These are home resources, useful for extending familiar learning beyond the classroom.
Settling was a strength of early years in November 2022: children became comfortable quickly and adults supported their learning effectively. The emphasis on conversation also gives children practice in explaining what they need.
Nursery staffing includes a Foundation Stage teacher, a higher level teaching assistant and teaching assistants. Families can raise developmental concerns with the class teacher or SEND coordinators. Support may involve classroom adjustments, assessment or outside specialists, including Speech and Language Therapy. Parents whose child already has agency support should share that information when nursery begins, helping staff coordinate care from the start.
Food sits within the school’s wellbeing arrangements, which include meals and snacks for Foundation children. The wider school’s pastoral provision also includes calm zones outside classrooms, giving self-regulation a physical place in the environment. Family Mentors support parents with behaviour at home, parenting and understanding their child’s learning, as well as accessing local services.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. For Leeds residents, the route is Leeds City Council Admissions Team. The deadline of 15 January 2026 applied to September 2026 entry and has passed.
Transition preparation is a separate matter. Blenheim’s school-wide programme gives children a week to prepare for changed routines before the summer holiday. Familiarity with school routines should not be confused with an admissions entitlement.

Uniform. School uniform is required, but branded garments are optional. Plain red knitwear, white shirts and grey or black bottoms are accepted, allowing families to buy from different retailers. Indoor footwear is also required.
Travel. The school acknowledges congestion and parking difficulties around the beginning and end of the day. Build that into collection plans; its travel guidance encourages careful driving and avoiding yellow lines.
