Singing, stories and outdoor exploration give Broadgate’s nursery its character. This is the school’s own provision in Horsforth, with learning through play and opportunities for children to develop their interests indoors and outside. For parents choosing a first school experience, those details put the emphasis on what children do during their session.
Two three-hour sessions shape the nursery day. Activities include singing, listening to stories and exploring outside, while play gives children opportunities to learn alongside their friends. These are concrete starting points for a child’s experience: shared activities, personal interests and time outdoors.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guides the curriculum. Broadgate places particular emphasis in early years on starting learning from children’s experiences and interests. In parent terms, familiar subjects help children connect new learning with things they already recognise. Developing independence is also part of the approach, so children are encouraged to become active participants in their learning.
An EYFS outdoor play area provides a physical setting for that exploration. The school grounds also contain an outdoor classroom, although that is a school-wide facility. Outdoor learning therefore has its own space alongside classroom activities.
At the May 2024 inspection, Ofsted identified early years as a strength, with mathematics receiving specific praise. Adults used questions to extend children’s thinking, and carefully chosen activities helped develop their mathematical knowledge. The implication is useful for parents: adult involvement in play and activities matters here, alongside the opportunity to explore independently.
The nursery team includes a practitioner whose Level 3 early years qualification dates from 2002. Team introductions emphasise relationships with children and their families, alongside helping children learn through play. That gives family relationships a place in the nursery’s description of its work.
Additional support sits within the wider school structure. Depending on a child’s needs, Broadgate may use teaching in small groups, individual education plans or support from an adult working with one child. These are conditional forms of help rather than a fixed package for every child.
Speech and language therapists and educational psychologists are among the external professionals the school works with. An inclusion manager and learning mentor also form part of its support structure. For a child who needs extra help to participate, the relevant distinction is between everyday nursery activities and support tailored to their needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through their home local authority; Leeds residents use the council’s online application route. Keep that application separate from arrangements for nursery sessions.
Leeds City Council is Broadgate’s admission authority. For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past, so families planning a later start should follow the normal application timetable for their child’s intake rather than reuse those dates.
Morning nursery runs from 8:40am to 11:40am; the afternoon session runs from 12:10pm to 3:10pm. The school describes integrated care as a way for parents to add time to the free 15-hour entitlement if they wish. School reception is the enquiry point for that arrangement and current charges.
For general nursery enquiries, contact the office by telephone on 0113 2582685 or email office@broadgateprimary.org.uk. The school is on North Broadgate Lane in Horsforth. Families needing assistance with access to the site can also contact the office, giving them a direct route to discuss accessibility before coming to school.
