Language and books give Oakwood’s early years provision its clearest character. Staff develop children’s communication skills, while carefully chosen reading introduces new vocabulary. For a child beginning nursery, that places learning to express themselves alongside their first encounters with stories.
Three-year-olds can attend Co-op Academy Oakwood’s nursery within its primary school on North Farm Road, Leeds. The distinction matters when considering its inspection: Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 17 and 18 May 2023. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
Communication is a specific teaching focus. In May 2023, early years staff supported language development effectively, giving families a concrete reason to consider this provision for a child beginning to build their vocabulary and confidence in speaking. The emphasis is on developing those skills, rather than treating conversation as incidental to learning.
Books provide another part of that work. Early years children encounter texts selected for their quality, with vocabulary development as their purpose. This connects reading with language: the value for a young child includes learning words as well as becoming familiar with books.
The curriculum is planned to connect early years learning with subsequent education. For parents, the useful distinction is between that educational continuity and admission to the next class. A connected curriculum does not secure a Reception place.
Additional needs. In May 2023, some SEND support plans across the school used overly broad targets or specified provision that did not fit pupils’ needs closely enough. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a finding specifically about nursery children. For families considering additional support, precise goals and provision matched to their child are important points to examine.
Curriculum oversight. At the same inspection, some leaders lacked sufficient oversight of their responsibilities, and inconsistent delivery affected pupils’ progress. This concern also applied across the school. It should sit alongside the positive early years findings when families weigh the provision.
Attending Oakwood’s nursery does not guarantee a place in its Reception class. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the relevant deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
