Conversation gives Woodlands’ early years provision its character. Adults help children practise pronunciation, revisit useful phrases and respond to questions, making language development a concrete part of learning. For a parent choosing a first school setting, that emphasis matters: speaking and understanding receive deliberate attention.
The nursery belongs to Co-op Academy Woodlands on Foundry Place in Harehills, Leeds. Children can start in September, January or April once they have turned 3. This gives families three entry points across the year. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection of 26 and 27 September 2023; this is an early years judgement within the school’s inspection.
Language is the clearest thread through the early years teaching. In September 2023, adults used questions effectively, demonstrated how words should sound and returned to important phrases. These are practical ways of helping children take part in conversation, rather than leaving language development to chance.
The organisation of the learning space also supported children’s attention. In September 2023, children could stay focused for extended stretches, and they flourished with encouragement from adults. For families, the useful combination is purposeful adult interaction and a setting arranged to help children concentrate. The emphasis is on giving children time to engage with their learning.
Encouragement was a strength of the early years provision in September 2023. Children flourished with this support, alongside adults’ attention to communication. That connects care with the learning day: supportive interactions and help with language work together, rather than being separate parts of a child’s experience.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority’s website, with a deadline of 15 January. For Leeds residents, the route is Leeds City Council; families living elsewhere apply through their own council.
Attendance at the nursery is not a Reception priority criterion. Allocation takes account of care status, specified exceptional needs, siblings and catchment, with distance used to distinguish applicants within a priority. Choosing the nursery therefore needs to be a decision about the nursery experience itself. Keep the separate Reception application in the family calendar.
Two attendance patterns cover 15 hours of free nursery education each week. The first combines Monday and Tuesday, both 8:40am to 3:25pm, with Wednesday from 8:40am to 11:15am. The second starts with Wednesday from 1:00pm to 3:15pm, followed by Thursday and Friday, both 8:40am to 3:25pm.
Attendance pattern. Both options combine two longer days with a shorter Wednesday session. Families need to match the whole pattern to their childcare arrangements, including the different Wednesday collection times.
Nursery applications go directly to the main office. Call 0113 2407382; telephone help is available from 8am to 4pm. This is a different route from the council application needed for Reception, so the two processes should be handled separately.
