Stories, conversation and purposeful play give Cross Gates’ early years provision its character. The school’s nursery offer includes First Steps for two-year-olds, within Cross Gates Primary School on Poole Crescent in Leeds.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 17 and 18 April 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school. It is not a separate nursery rating. For parents, the strongest detail is the attention adults give to children’s language as they learn and play.
Play provides the structure for learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum brings together physical development, communication, relationships and emotions, alongside early reading, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. Children can explore these areas both indoors and outdoors, so learning is not confined to time at a table.
Activities respond to children’s interests and individual needs. In April 2024, adults’ understanding of young children’s development translated into skilful conversations that extended vocabulary. Stories and rhymes supported learning, while exploration and manageable risks gave children opportunities to try things for themselves. Children made substantial progress relative to where they began.
There was a clear rhythm to this learning: established routines helped children concentrate, cooperate and play calmly. This matters for families seeking a first experience of group learning, where taking part alongside other children is as important as the activity itself.
Parents contribute to their child’s learning journey and suggest interests that can shape planning. Reading Cafe/Stay and Play sessions and learning workshops offer ways to take part, connecting experiences at home with those in the setting.
SEND provision is overseen across the school by a special educational needs coordinator. The school works with families and external professionals, with early intervention included in its support arrangements. The Hub is a school facility for complex speech and language needs, including autism; it contains a sensory room and an accessible toilet. Access is decided by the school and does not require a diagnosis or an education, health and care plan. These are school support arrangements, rather than an automatic nursery placement offer.
Leeds Catering supplies the school’s meals. Dietary requirements are addressed through the school’s meal information.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions route.
For September 2026 entry, applications went through Leeds School Admissions, with a deadline of 15 January 2026. That cycle is past. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions, and use the normal admissions timetable for your child’s entry year.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon session is 12.15pm to 3.15pm. These are useful anchors for planning collection around work or other children’s schedules.
Enquiries go to the school office on 0113 2645763 or admin@crossgatesprimary.co.uk. The school’s uniform policy allows clothing with or without its logo, and branded items are optional. Second-hand uniform is also offered, providing another practical option for families.
