At a Glance

Storytelling, animal drawings and hands-on maths give East Garforth’s nursery learning a concrete shape. This is the academy’s provision for three and four year olds, with 26 nursery places and a maximum of 52 places offered across the provision. It sits within East Garforth Primary Academy on Aberford Road, Garforth.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 24 and 25 January 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The detail matters: language learning had a clear purpose, while activities and routines needed closer attention.

The Nursery Day

Language and stories are a clear focus. In January 2023, a nursery language programme prepared children for later phonics teaching, and enjoyment of books began in Nursery. For parents, the emphasis is on building the language children need before more formal reading instruction.

Talk 4 Writing features in FS1 learning. During October 2025, children described zoo animals and drew imaginary animals of their own. Maths included sorting and working out the rules behind groups of objects. These examples connect talk, drawing and mathematical thinking: children explain ideas as well as make things.

Care routines also become learning activities. In October 2025, FS1 children explored why, when and how to wash their hands, then used soap and pepper in an experiment. That makes hygiene something to understand and practise.

In January 2023, the early years curriculum took account of children’s previous experiences and set learning aims. However, in January 2023, some activities lacked precise learning goals or needed too much adult help; provision did not consistently suit children’s abilities and needs. Behaviour expectations and routines were also insufficiently established, with missed instructions disrupting learning. Families should weigh those concerns alongside the language work.

Care and Support

Settling begins with contact at home: nursery staff arrange an appointment to visit every new starter. This gives families an opportunity to meet nursery staff at home. Early years staffing includes a nursery nurse, a teacher who leads early years and a teaching assistant.

For children with SEND, an induction meeting before admission helps plan for their needs. The SEND coordinator works with teachers and parents, and support can include smaller groups, individual help and personalised resources. Chatterbugs provides speech and language support in school one day per half term. Physical access measures across the academy include ramps, accessible parking and a toilet with a changing bed.

Mellors supplies school meals. Children attending a full day can have a school lunch ordered for them, with a charge; drinking water is freely accessible and reusable bottles are encouraged. Meat is not Halal, so families should take that into account when considering lunch arrangements.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no admissions priority. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority by the normal deadline. Choosing the nursery therefore remains a decision about the nursery experience, rather than securing the next school place.

For pupils with SEND moving between year groups, information passes to their new teachers, and a personalised transition plan can be put in place where helpful. This support is separate from the admissions decision.

Practical Information

Funded provision normally starts at the beginning of the term after a child turns three. Universal entitlement is up to 15 hours a week, spread over at least 38 weeks; eligible three and four year olds may apply for up to 30 hours. Requested lunches and additional nursery hours incur charges. Contact the school for current charges.

Families indicate their preferred attendance hours when applying, but those preferences cannot be guaranteed. Oversubscription criteria decide competing requests for the same session, so flexibility can matter when arranging childcare.

For nursery enquiries, email info@egpa.org.uk or call 0113 212 7100. Applications are accepted through the online application forms or by contacting the office at info@egpa.org.uk. Nursery visiting sessions are arranged each term. Uniform includes a royal blue sweatshirt, jumper or cardigan, grey bottoms, a white top and black shoes; the blue item can be worn with or without a logo.
