At a Glance

Plant care, painting and walks around the school field give the Gatehouse Nursery its character. This is Gateways School’s provision for children aged two to three in Harewood, Leeds, with Pre-Reception catering for ages three to four. The nursery belongs to the school’s early years section; the March 2026 inspection recorded two Nursery classes.

A child’s interests help shape the learning. In the early years, teaching builds language, early literacy and number skills through activities planned around those interests. That gives the practical play a clear educational purpose.

The Nursery Day

The Gatehouse day combines creative activity, outdoor exploration and quieter periods. Children paint, draw on a whiteboard and investigate colour, size and shape. Outside, they tend plants and take walks around the school field. These are concrete opportunities to practise observation, movement and making choices.

After lunch, the pace slows. Children who are awake tackle puzzles, match objects or sort colours while others sleep. Later, tea and stories provide another quieter part of the day. The daily account places cooked lunch at 11.30am and tea at 4.15pm, useful anchors for parents thinking about their child’s routine.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together early learning and children’s physical, emotional and social development. In March 2026, ISI found effective early years teaching, with trusting relationships helping children gain confidence. Suitable play apparatus supports movement skills, while activities in the surrounding woodland help children practise sharing and develop an understanding of nature.

ISI also recommended that all teachers use questions consistently to deepen children’s thinking and extend learning. The reported weakness was particularly in high school; it was not identified specifically in nursery teaching.

Elite Kids Coaching runs Rugby/Tag Rugby for nursery children. For Pre-Reception, additional choices include ballet with LM Stage School and Spanish with Smartypants Languages. Some activities carry charges, and club choices can change during the academic year.

Care and Support

A Key Practitioner provides a familiar adult connection in the Gatehouse. At collection, parents receive updates about their child’s activities, eating and naps, with time to discuss interests and learning. Nursery progress is also communicated through the Learning Journey, giving families another way to follow development.

Meals and rest form part of the routine. Children eat a cooked lunch together in the Gatehouse, with a song used to reinforce table manners. Afterward, sleep and calm activities accommodate different needs rather than requiring every child to nap.

Early years teachers work with the SEND provision leader and share observations to address developmental delays. Play activities support hand control and literacy. In March 2026, early years safeguarding and welfare requirements were in place, and frequent contact with parents helped families support learning. For children needing enhanced learning support, additional charges can apply; the learning support policy also cautions that resources may not accommodate complex EHC-plan needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Gateways’ contract assumes children will move through the school if they meet the relevant progression criteria, which are governed by its Admissions Policy. Treat that condition as part of the decision, rather than assuming that paying for nursery secures the next stage.

Reception entry is handled through Gateways’ own admissions process. Its policy provides individually arranged visits and assessment sessions for young children, with an assigned key contact. These admissions arrangements are separate from the daily familiarity a child develops in the nursery.

Practical Information

Morning and full-day options are listed for the Gatehouse. Nursery starters must commit to at least three sessions each week; Pre-Reception starters must commit to at least five. The Gatehouse opens at 7.30am and closes at 6pm, giving its opening day a longer span than the school’s standard timetable.

FEEE funding is offered from age two. Nursery and Pre-Reception charges are obtainable from the Registrar, so families should request the current charges and funding breakdown. Morning provision includes lunch and snacks. The school’s general fee structure lists meals, trips and before- and after-school clubs as extras, making the nursery-specific breakdown useful before accepting a place.

Book a personal visit through the admissions form or contact the Registrar on 0113 288 6345. Admissions enquiries can also go to admissions@gatewaysschool.co.uk. A visit allows parents to meet staff and discuss how the session pattern would fit their child.
