Storytelling and new vocabulary give Greenhill’s early years provision its character. Children explore through purposeful activities, with adults building language as learning unfolds. This is the nursery within Greenhill Primary School on Gamble Hill Drive, Leeds, for children aged three and four.
The nursery admissions policy sets capacity at 52 children, split into 26 morning places and 26 afternoon places. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 10 and 11 December 2024; this is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
Morning and afternoon sessions provide a regular weekly rhythm. The school-day timetable gives nursery hours of 8.30am to 11.30am and 12.10pm to 3.10pm, Monday to Friday in term time. For the 15-hour session offer, children attend five sessions each week, so families should plan around daily attendance rather than occasional bookings.
Language learning has a clear purpose here. In December 2024, staff understood children’s individual learning needs and used opportunities throughout activities to introduce vocabulary. Children enjoyed recounting familiar stories and explaining their knowledge. For parents, that gives a concrete picture of learning through conversation and activity, with adults identifying what each child needs next.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) also provides the framework for identifying additional needs and following children’s development. Greenhill’s early years SEND policy calls for staff to respond promptly to emerging difficulties and review progress. Learning and support are considered together.
Settling begins before the first nursery session. Once a place becomes free, nursery staff arrange both a start date and a home visit at a time agreed with the family. That creates an opportunity for contact before nursery attendance begins.
Support for additional needs combines the class teacher, SENDCo and the school’s Inclusion Team. The team includes Learning Mentors, an ASC Lead Practitioner and a Speech and Language Assistant. Early years policy requires parents to be informed when additional educational provision is introduced, with support assessed, planned, put into practice and reviewed. Families therefore have a role in decisions as well as progress discussions.
School-level adaptations include visual timetables, now-and-next boards and access to quiet areas. These can help children understand routines or reduce distractions according to their needs. Greenhill’s school-wide meal system uses SchoolGrid: parents select meals online, supported by meal pictures and a three-week menu cycle. Registration is through the office. Families considering full-day nursery attendance should confirm nursery lunch arrangements with the office.
A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through their home local authority; Leeds families use the council’s online application route. The timetable for September 2026 entry had a closing date of 15 January 2026. That deadline belongs to a past intake.
For children with an Education, Health and Care plan, the SEND policy provides for review before a change of educational phase so that support can be planned. This preparation is separate from securing a school place.
Attendance patterns. The admissions page describes morning or afternoon provision totalling 15 hours, while the nursery policy also lists beginning-of-week, end-of-week and full-time patterns. The Early Years Phase Leader makes the final decision on attendance hours and pattern. A preferred morning or afternoon place is not guaranteed.
Funding starts from the term after a child’s third birthday for the 15-hour entitlement. A limited number of 30-hour FEEE places are offered to eligible families; the school requires an eligibility code and National Insurance details when enquiring. The policy describes the 30-hour entitlement over 38 term-time weeks.
