At a Glance

Leaves gathered in the Tranquility Garden become faces, patterns and pictures at Hollybush’s nursery. That connection between outdoor discovery, talk and creative work gives the provision its character. Children aged 3 and 4 belong to the school’s Early Years Unit in Bramley, Leeds. Capacity is 39 full-time places, or 78 part-time places.

Ofsted’s January 2026 judgement for early years was Expected standard. This covers the school’s early years provision rather than giving the nursery a separate rating. Communication was a clear strength: adults helped children acquire vocabulary and use it in conversation.

The Nursery Day

Autumn Adventures brings seasonal change into children’s learning, including leaves and animals getting ready for winter. The Very Hungry Caterpillar introduces life cycles and healthy eating through a story. Activities have included collecting natural materials in the Tranquility Garden, arranging them into patterns and faces, and drawing and painting from observation. Children have something concrete to examine, discuss and represent.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning through exploration with developing language, relationships and early reading, writing and maths. Hollybush uses planning that responds to children’s interests as they emerge, alongside indoor and outdoor opportunities to revisit learning. Its aim is for children to express ideas, ask questions and become increasingly independent.

Listening comes before formal reading. Phase 1 Phonics uses songs, rhymes and listening games; letter sounds are introduced through Read Write Inc in the summer term. Maths Mastery is adapted for nursery, with early concepts explored through teaching and learning activities. Counting happens daily in EYFS, and children are encouraged to use mathematical vocabulary. These approaches give words and sounds a practical purpose.

Safety is also taught through activity. In January 2026, nursery children were learning safe scissor use and how to play carefully on outdoor equipment. Books across early years introduced different kinds of families, helping children explore lives beyond their own.

Care and Support

Relationships with families support the start of nursery life. In January 2026, early years teachers spent time building relationships with parents and carers, and children made a positive start. Nursery activities have also brought grown-ups into the classroom to share children’s learning.

Support starts from each child’s level of development. Early years teachers adapted learning for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), including listening to environmental sounds for children needing that starting point. Staff training in colourful semantics supports understanding of words and sentence structure, while additional NHS Speech and Language support serves disadvantaged children and those with specific communication and interaction needs.

For children attending across lunchtime, the choice is a school dinner or a packed lunch. Nursery milk is free, and Foundation children receive fruit daily. That gives families clear food choices alongside the longer session.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Leeds City Council’s primary admissions process. For September 2026 entry, the application window ran from 1 November 2025 to 15 January 2026; that cycle has closed. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions.

Practical Information

Five attendance patterns accommodate different weeks: weekday mornings, weekday afternoons, a Monday and Tuesday full-day block with Wednesday morning, a Wednesday afternoon block with full days on Thursday and Friday, and full days throughout the working week. The 30-hour option depends on eligibility and available places; the two split-week patterns also carry eligibility and availability conditions.

The extended offer runs from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Eligible families bring their National Insurance Number and 11-digit eligibility code to the office. The longer arrangement includes charged time beyond the funded hours; contact the school for current charges. Eligible families can also divide their entitlement between providers.

Children start in the term after their third birthday, subject to space. Submit the nursery application form to join the waiting list. Visits can be arranged through the office on 0113 887 3310 or parents@hollybushprimary.org.
