At a Glance

An outdoor area of its own, plus weekly time at the allotment and Library, gives Hunslet Carr’s nursery a footprint beyond its classroom. This is the school’s own early years provision in Hunslet, Leeds, with 78 nursery places. Children join from the intake following their third birthday, with entry points in September, January and April. Early years classrooms sit downstairs in the school.

Ofsted’s June 2026 judgement for early years was Expected standard. That covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Morning and afternoon groups provide the usual rhythm: children attend five mornings or five afternoons each week, while eligible children can take full days. Inside, the nursery classroom has an Interactive Clevertouch Screen. Outside, children use their own learning area, with weekly access to the school allotment and Library adding different spaces to the week. These give children opportunities to learn beyond the classroom as well as within it.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) shapes the curriculum. Its seven areas bring together learning about numbers and literacy, physical development, communication, relationships, creative expression and understanding the world. For parents, that means early learning extends beyond letters and counting to how children communicate, move and interact with others.

Language receives sustained attention. In June 2026, adults’ conversations with children were a central part of early years learning throughout the day. Staff assessed what children could already do and adjusted learning accordingly; children starting below age expectations generally progressed well. Familiar routines helped them feel secure enough to learn. The curriculum also developed concentration and learning habits, giving the day a purpose beyond completing individual activities.

Care and Support

Stay and Play sessions introduce children to nursery, followed by a phased start tailored to the child. That gives settling a gradual structure. Tapestry shares children’s learning experiences with families, while the June 2026 early years findings highlighted regular contact with parents and the relationships between families and staff.

There is nursery-specific SEND expertise: the Nursery teacher specialises in SEND and is undertaking the SEND National Professional Qualification. Across the school, support follows Assess, Plan, Do, Review, so provision is reconsidered as children’s needs change. An NHS Speech and Language Therapist works across the school for two days each week, contributing assessment, interventions and advice to staff. These are school resources, with support planned around individual needs.

Moving On to Reception

Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. For September 2027 entry, the national application deadline is 15 January 2027. Leeds applications open on 1 November 2026; families applying through another local authority should check its opening date. Leeds families can apply at www.leeds.gov.uk/apply. Keep that application separate from arranging nursery attendance.

For children with SEND, the school’s transition arrangements include staff handovers, classroom familiarisation and visual supports or social stories according to need. Sharing support plans helps the next teaching team prepare. This practical preparation is separate from the allocation of a Reception place.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 8:40am to 11:40am; afternoon nursery runs from 12:20pm to 3:20pm. The standard pattern is a whole week of mornings or afternoons. Full-day attendance is conditional on eligibility for the extended hours offer, so it is not simply another unrestricted booking choice.

Children can start in the term after turning three, with 15 hours weekly offered to everyone and 30 hours for eligible children. Registration can begin at age two. Nursery enquiries go to admissions@hunsletcarr.co.uk or 0113 271 3804. School tours can be arranged by contacting the school.

Uniform expectations apply across the school: navy sweatshirts or cardigans, pale blue or white polo shirts, and black, grey or blue bottoms. Black shoes or trainers complete the uniform. Clothing should carry the child’s name, helping staff keep belongings with their owner.
