Bikes, balancing and books give Beech nursery its character. Part of Kerr Mackie Primary School on Gledhow Lane in Leeds, the nursery combines time to explore with teaching that puts language first. Its curriculum runs over a two-year cycle, giving learning a structure across children's time here.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 11 and 12 May 2022; this was an early years judgement within the school's inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating. Curriculum consistency. In May 2022, some children had not reached their potential, and the early years curriculum needed to become established and be applied consistently. That makes consistency of teaching a useful focus when considering the nursery.
Play and directed teaching share the session. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers children's movement, relationships and communication alongside early reading, maths, creativity and understanding their surroundings. Whole-class teaching, smaller groups and individual support sit alongside opportunities to explore inside and outdoors. Circle time gives feelings and relationships their own place in the timetable.
Listening comes before formal reading. Nursery phonics includes recognising sounds, joining sounds together aloud and breaking spoken words into sounds. Children clap, stamp and explore rhyme, with Floppy's Phonics providing the named approach across early years. Writing begins with making marks. Under Maths Mastery, nursery sessions introduce counting, shapes, sorting, quantities and patterns, giving children practical starting points for mathematical thinking.
The outdoor area is part of learning, with access during free-flow time. Bikes and equipment for climbing, jumping and balancing give children opportunities to practise movement and manage physical challenges. Nursery children also play alongside Reception children here. Indoors, the classroom reading corner provides somewhere to choose books; stories and termly themes supply starting points that staff develop through children's interests. Learning about family celebrations and sharing photographs from home connects the curriculum with children's own lives.
Relationships support the work on language. In May 2022, adults introduced vocabulary through both play and teaching, while positive relationships helped children interact confidently and independently. The early years team includes multilingual staff who work with families, using knowledge of children's interests and backgrounds to help them feel settled. Workshops on reading, phonics and maths give parents practical ways to support learning at home.
Extra help includes bug club language intervention and additional maths and phonics support. The school's SEND arrangements include speech and language work and personalised plans reviewed with parents. Families can contact the SENCO through sendco@kmps.org.uk, giving them a direct route to discuss additional needs.
Fresh fruit is provided daily for early years children. At lunchtime, Nursery supervision includes an adult with paediatric first aid training. For children attending wraparound care, breakfast choices include cereal, toast and crumpets; after-school provision includes fruit or vegetable snacks and a hot option with pudding. These meals belong to the clubs, so families should distinguish them from the nursery session itself.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception process by its normal deadline. For the 2026 to 2027 entry cycle, the school's admissions instructions directed families to apply online through Leeds City Council.
Shared outdoor play gives nursery children contact with Reception children before the next stage. That is a practical connection between the classes, not an admissions entitlement.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoon nursery runs from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. The nursery application form allows preferences for mornings, afternoons, the beginning or end of the week, and 30 hours. These are requests rather than promises of availability.
Wraparound care includes nursery children, with breakfast provision beginning at 7.30am and after-school care finishing at 6pm. Both clubs require advance booking; emergency bookings depend on space. The clubs operate during term time, Monday to Friday, and charges apply. Contact the school for current charges.
Use the nursery application form or contact office@kmps.org.uk on 0113 3368499. Afternoon collection is outside the cloakroom doors at 3.15pm. Collection after those doors close moves to wraparound care and incurs a charge, so punctual pickup matters.
Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am, and afternoon sessions from 12.15pm to 3.15pm.
