At a Glance

Plan a piece of play, try it out, then talk about what happened: that sequence gives Kippax Greenfield’s early years its character. Nursery provision is for children aged 3 to 4, with nursery and Reception grouped in Leeds Class. This places the nursery within the school’s teaching structure, while its day centres on play, conversation and children’s choices.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together physical development, relationships and communication with early literacy, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. Topics connect these areas through carefully chosen books. Children’s interests also shape the learning, giving their questions a place alongside adult planning.

Plan, do, review gives child-initiated learning a clear rhythm. Children first discuss their intentions with the group, then pursue their ideas while adults observe and help. Afterwards, they gather to share discoveries and things they have made. Staff use photographs and conversations to help children reflect, then plan what comes next. Talking has a practical purpose here: explaining an idea, listening to another child and deciding how to develop the play.

Indoor and outdoor learning happen daily. Children can relocate resources to suit their games, rather than keeping every activity fixed in one place. Adults join the play and demonstrate ways to tackle problems, while the learning spaces change with children’s needs and interests. Mathematics appears in both targeted activities and independent play, giving children opportunities to revisit a concept in different contexts.

Care and Support

Each child has a key person, selected after staff observe which relationships develop during the first days. That adult also acts as the family’s main contact. The arrangement gives parents a clear person to approach and gives the child a familiar adult who understands their interests.

Settling includes optional sessions that parents can attend with their child, alongside home visits and staggered starts. These offer ways to build familiarity before the child takes on the full routine.

Dojo carries daily pictures, videos and comments about learning. Through Tapestry, parents can contribute observations from home as well as follow their child’s development. Learning consultations take place twice a year, with stay and play opportunities during the year.

The school’s inclusion team brings together leadership, the SENCO and a learning mentor. Additional needs are assessed on entry and monitored afterwards; parents participate in review meetings. Speech and Language therapy and Educational Psychologists are among the services the school works with, connecting classroom support with specialist advice. Safeguarding concerns can be raised through the office with the safeguarding team.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority; Leeds residents use Leeds City Council’s application route. For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026.

Familiarity and admission are separate matters. Transition activities include classroom play with parents, introductory visits and staff visiting children in their nursery setting. These help children get to know the people and surroundings involved in the next step.

Practical Information

Provision covers 15 or 30 hours, depending on family needs and eligibility. Nursery applications are accepted throughout the year, and children can begin in September, January or April in the term following their third birthday.

Book a nursery visit through the school office before applying. Contact 0113 2876195 or kgpsoffice@brigshawtrust.com to arrange an appointment.
