Counting games and songs give Lane End’s nursery its clearest character: early learning through activities children can join in with. This is the school’s own provision for three and four year olds, on Beeston Road in Leeds. Families can choose a morning or afternoon pattern, with longer provision for eligible working families.
Early years provision was judged Good by Ofsted at the inspection on 13 and 14 December 2022. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision. For September 2027 to July 2028, nursery numbers are flexible according to the cohort’s needs, rather than a fixed intake.
Games make early mathematics practical. In December 2022, nursery children developed number knowledge through singing, listening and counting activities. The learning had a clear purpose, with children building mathematical understanding through participation. Numbers were something to use and explore.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and care together for children up to five. Its seven learning areas cover movement, communication, relationships and emotions, alongside maths, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. At Lane End, activities are adapted to children’s interests and individual needs. That gives staff room to shape learning around the child rather than follow an identical activity for everyone.
Parents can follow the nursery’s learning through updates and the Parents Information Board. Teachers and learning leaders also welcome conversations with families, giving parents a route to connect what their child does at home with their learning in nursery.
Additional needs have a defined support process. Across the school, the SEND coordinator and class teachers use Assess, Plan, Do, Review: identify needs, agree support, put it into practice and review its effect. Parents contribute their views to assessment and help agree adjustments and review points. This makes support a shared discussion with families.
The class teacher retains responsibility for a child’s daily teaching even when another member of staff delivers an intervention. School links include the Chatterbugs speech and language service, SENIT workers and STARS Autism workers. Parents can raise a concern with the class teacher or SEND coordinator, with senior leadership as the next step if it remains unresolved.
Nursery attendance gives no priority for Reception and does not guarantee a place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. For the September 2027 intake, applications open in early November and close on 15th January. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery provision.
For children receiving additional SEND support, the school plans transition meetings and familiarisation visits; extra visits may also be offered. These arrangements concern preparation and support. They do not change the Reception admissions position.
The 15-hour pattern consists of a three-hour session each day: mornings run from 8.45am to 11.45am, while afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Eligible working families can access the 30-hour pattern, running from 8.45am to 3.30pm Monday to Thursday and finishing at 11.45am on Friday. That shorter Friday matters when arranging childcare around work.
Visits are by appointment with the Nursery Teacher. Contact 0113 8313449 or enquiries@laneendprimary.org.uk to arrange one. Nursery application forms can be returned to school in person or by email, giving families two ways to complete the application.
