Children’s interests set the direction at Low Road’s nursery, with play providing the starting point for learning. The federation’s early years approach builds activities around what catches a child’s attention, rather than treating every child’s starting point as identical. This is nursery provision within Low Road Primary School in Hunslet, Leeds.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 11 and 12 October 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The balance for parents is a curriculum centred on exploration, alongside a specific need to strengthen adults’ support for language development.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework, with Reggio Emilia informing the federation’s approach. In practical terms, children’s interests help shape their play, while adults plan opportunities to move their thinking forward. Open-ended provision gives children scope to investigate, try an idea and return to it, rather than complete only a predetermined task.
Learning spans seven areas. Talking and listening, movement, and relationships sit alongside early literacy, maths, creative expression and understanding the world. Stories and rhymes introduce language and sounds; exploring shape, pattern and number develops mathematical thinking. Music, imaginative play and dance are also included in the EYFS curriculum. The emphasis extends to how children learn: concentrating, persisting and developing ideas matter alongside what they know.
Low Road’s early years grounds were reworked in May 2022, with local businesses contributing small trees, plants and equipment. These are concrete features of the outdoor setting, giving the provision a planted environment as well as its learning spaces.
In October 2023, children had opportunities to pursue interests through exploration, with adults joining their play. Reading and number learning supported preparation for the next stage, but development across the other areas still needed work. Language support. Adults sometimes missed chances to expand children’s thinking and conversation. Training in language modelling and effective interaction was an improvement requirement, making adult conversation during play an important consideration for families.
Relationships with families form part of the early years approach. Staff use children’s individual starting points to shape learning, so knowledge of the child matters to the activities they plan. The Parent Partnership EYFS resources cover support at home, reading, phonics, and communication and language, giving parents subjects to explore alongside nursery learning.
For concerns about speech and language, the EYFS Communication and Language page links to a parents’ guide, a speech and language toolkit and NHS advice. These provide practical routes into understanding a child’s communication needs.
Support also has a school and federation structure: there is Low Road SEND support, alongside a federation SENDCO and SEND support team. Parents can raise additional needs through that structure. The safeguarding team includes a safeguarding lead and child protection officers.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Low Road. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the early years experience itself, with the Reception application treated as a separate step.
Two sessions shape the nursery timetable: mornings run from 8:30 to 11:00, and afternoons from 12:15 to 15:15. These are distinct blocks for families to fit around work and collection arrangements.
Additional sessions. Paid extra sessions may be possible, subject to availability. Families should obtain current charges from the school before relying on extra time. The nursery sessions page directs parents to Childcare Choices for information about funded hours.
