Nursery at Manor Wood Primary School

Forest play and an imaginary restaurant give Manor Wood’s early years a distinctive character: children explore outside and find reasons to write through their play. The three-year-old pre-school nursery sits within the Foundation Stage Unit and has 78 places. Alongside it, Baby Nest and the two-year-old provision serve younger children on the school campus.
These are different starting points within the school’s early provision. For parents choosing the pre-school nursery, the important combination is a school-based setting, outdoor exploration and learning that connects children’s ideas with language and writing.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. In April 2025, early-years children practised writing through activities such as adding labels to drawings and creating menus for pretend restaurant play. These give writing a purpose children can understand: their marks and words become part of something they have made or imagined.
Adults develop children’s language through their own examples and use questions to extend thinking. The April 2025 inspection found that the early-years environment supported creativity and that children developed confidence and independence. This describes the early-years provision collectively, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Outdoor learning has a concrete setting in the forest area, where early-years children explore and play adventurously. Indoors, visual support includes portable packs and consistent pictures on walls in the Foundation Stage Unit. Those visual cues give children another way to understand what adults are communicating, alongside spoken language.
Home visits before children join nursery or the two-year-old provision help staff understand disabilities and plan adjustments before the start. The Children’s Centre also has a care suite used by the school. Families can therefore discuss personal care and access needs as part of preparing for attendance.
SEND support follows a cycle of assessing needs, planning help, putting it into practice and reviewing progress with parents. Early-years assessment includes SENIT DJ, and a referral to Chatterbug for speech and language support may be made. The class teacher is the first contact for everyday questions; the SEND team also accepts enquiries at sendteam@manorwood.owlcotesmat.org.
For children using Mini Wood Club, breakfast, healthy snacks and a small evening meal are provided, with dietary requirements catered for. This food provision belongs to the before- and after-school service.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate school application through the normal admissions route. For September 2026 entry, applications were made online through Leeds City Council, with a deadline of 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past.
Transition support and admissions are separate matters. For children receiving additional SEND support, planning for the next phase includes meetings and familiarisation visits, with extra visits possible. This allows preparation to reflect individual needs; it does not secure a school place.
The 15-hour entitlement for three-year-olds follows an alternating fortnight: three full days in one week, totalling 18 hours, then two full days in the next, totalling 12 hours. Families need to plan around that changing weekly pattern.
A limited number of 30-hour places are offered to families with an eligibility code, across five school days in term time. Those hours cannot be divided with another provider, and before- or after-school care is excluded. Chargeable wraparound care runs from 7.30am to 9am and 3pm to 6pm, subject to places.
Mini Wood Club is oversubscribed, so enquire well ahead through the Children’s Centre team on 0113 2693515 or cc@manorwood.owlcotesmat.org. Nursery enquiries can also begin through the Nursery Enquiry Form. Ask the school for current charges for its extended services.
