Conversation gives Meadowfield's nursery its character: adults take children's ideas seriously and use them to extend learning. In April 2023, Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The nursery belongs to Meadowfield Primary School on Halton Moor Avenue in Leeds. Each September, the school admits 78 children into Nursery. For parents, the strongest detail is what happens between adults and children: language development runs through their interactions.
The early years foundation stage here puts curiosity, communication and growing independence into practice. In April 2023, the early years curriculum was carefully sequenced, with clear expectations for what children would learn. Adults developed children's thinking by listening and taking their ideas further. This gives conversation a teaching purpose, helping children find words for what interests them.
The early years learning space was orderly, inviting and equipped to encourage exploration. Children sustained their attention and became absorbed in activities. Familiar routines and clear expectations also helped them manage their behaviour and treat others respectfully. Independence was supported by the way the environment and adult interactions worked together.
Read, Write Inc begins towards the end of Nursery. Its focus is phonics: connecting letters with sounds as children begin reading and writing. Nursery children also take library books home with reading records. These give families something concrete to share and a way to keep conversations about reading going between home and nursery.
An experienced early years team, with training and skilled adult interaction, supported children's learning in April 2023. Parents also had opportunities to play alongside their children in early years. That brings families into children's learning, rather than limiting contact to a progress update.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), concerns start with the class teacher and can lead to discussion with the SEND coordinator, assessment or specialist referrals. Families whose child already has agency support should tell the school before nursery starts, so staff can work with those professionals. Speech and Language Therapy and the Complex Needs Team are among the services the school can involve.
Personal care has practical support behind it. The school has step-free access throughout, a disabled toilet and a hygiene suite with a changing bed whose height can be adjusted. Parents help shape intimate care plans where children with SEND need them, including help with toileting.
Across the school, children are offered toast and fruit in the morning, and drinking water is accessible in each classroom. These are useful everyday provisions alongside the nursery's learning routines.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Meadowfield. Parents must make a separate application if they want their child to continue into Reception. Treat that as a distinct decision and deadline.
For entry in September 2027, online applications open on 1 November 2026 and close on 15 January 2027. Families should complete that application even when their child already attends Nursery.
Apply for Nursery directly through the school. Visits can be arranged by appointment or through an open day, giving families a chance to look around before applying. Contact the office on 0113 3230010.
If your child is absent, call each day and select the attendance option. The attendance team can offer advice or support.
