Nursery at Ninelands Primary School

Play has room to spread at Ninelands: indoor classrooms and a large outdoor area form the early years learning space. This is the school’s own nursery in Garforth, welcoming children from age three. It sits within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with a nursery class teacher who also leads the team, alongside an early years support team.
Families can choose morning attendance, patterns combining whole days with a Wednesday session, or attendance across the working week. The school’s Out of School Club extends nursery provision from 7:30am to 6pm. That makes the choice about both a child’s learning and the hours a family needs.
Purposeful play shapes the curriculum. Children take part in activities guided by adults and activities they choose themselves, giving them opportunities to follow an interest while receiving teaching and support. Personalised Learning is the named approach to adapting opportunities around children’s interests and needs.
Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage guides the learning. In parent terms, the curriculum brings together talking, movement and emotional development with early reading, mathematics, creative activity and discovering how the world works. Children are encouraged to explore, persevere and develop their own ideas. These are learning habits as much as individual skills.
Outdoor learning is part of that picture, alongside the classrooms. Ofsted’s inspection on 17 and 18 May 2023 described early years children exploring outdoors to learn about animal life cycles. The space gives children a practical context for discovering the natural world.
Language receives specific attention in nursery. In May 2023, staff developed children’s vocabulary and used singing and rhyming to introduce letter sounds. That gives early reading a starting point in spoken language and listening, through activities suited to young children.
Preparation begins before the first session. Once a place has been allocated, the school arranges a nursery visit during the preceding term; nursery staff also offer every new starter an appointment for a home visit. Together, these provide opportunities for the family and staff to meet before attendance begins.
For children needing additional help, the school uses Individual Provision Maps and Support Plans agreed with parents. Support can include visual prompts, extra adult help or changes to the classroom. The SENCO can be contacted at senco@ninelands-school.co.uk, giving parents a direct route to discuss learning needs.
Nursery has its own lunch menu. Paid meals are handled through ParentPay, with accounts credited before purchase, unless a child qualifies for benefit-related free school meals. Ask the school for current meal charges when planning a longer day.
A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Ninelands Reception. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority and follow its normal timetable. Familiarity with the school does not replace that application.
For Leeds residents, the route is www.leeds.gov.uk/apply. The timetable for September 2026 entry had a deadline of 15 January 2026; that cycle is now past. Parents choosing nursery should keep the separate Reception application in their longer-term planning.
Morning attendance runs from 8:55am to 11:45am. Other patterns combine Monday and Tuesday, 8:55am to 3:30pm, with Wednesday morning, or Wednesday afternoon, 12:30pm to 3:30pm, with whole days on Thursday and Friday. Across Monday to Friday, another option runs from 8:55am to 1pm, with paid additional hours to 3:30pm.
Ninelands accepts 30-hour funded places, and funded hours can also cover its wraparound provision. Fee-paying places allow children to start from their third birthday before government-funded hours begin in the following term. Contact office@ninelands-school.co.uk for nursery enquiries and current charges.
Out of School Club bookings use Magic Booking. Advance reservations and a regular pattern are encouraged, while ad hoc bookings are also accepted. Early years handover takes place at the classroom door; at collection, staff release children after seeing their parent and calling the child’s name.
Fee-paying nursery places are offered from age three, before government-funded hours begin in the term following a child’s third birthday.
