Nursery at Oulton Primary School

At a Glance

Wellington boots and woodland exploration give Oulton’s nursery a clear character. Clownfish, its nursery class, belongs to the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with learning shaped by children’s interests and supported through play. This is an introduction to school life with outdoor discovery built into the approach.

There are 26 nursery places, with entry from age three subject to readiness and the nursery admission policy. The nursery teacher also holds the Outdoor Learning Leader role, linking the teaching team directly to that outdoor emphasis. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 28 and 29 September 2022; that judgement covers early years within the school rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Children’s ideas help determine topics, while adults demonstrate new skills and help children attempt them through play inside and outside. In parent terms, the EYFS here brings learning into exploration, stories and relationships. The woodland area supplies a concrete setting for discovery, rather than keeping learning entirely within the classroom.

Storytime combines listening to books with early reading and writing skills. Read, Write, Inc is the named phonics programme, and nursery children have separate phonics sessions. Personal, social and emotional learning also begins in nursery: relationships, confidence and handling feelings form part of the curriculum, so learning to manage being together sits alongside early literacy.

The April 2024 nursery plan gives a detailed example of how a topic takes shape. Growing connected The Hungry Caterpillar, Jasper’s Beanstalk and the Enormous Turnip with plans to care for caterpillars and grow flowers, vegetables and fruit. Woodland activities involved studying seasonal changes and looking for minibeasts respectfully. Dance drew on stories, with children practising movement patterns to music.

That same plan used Fred Talk games to practise joining spoken sounds into words and breaking words into sounds. Number work focused on four and five, using counters, cubes and five frames to connect quantities with numerals. Number hunts took that learning into the surroundings. In September 2022, early years mathematics was developing well, although indoor and outdoor number activities needed further development to extend children’s skills.

Care and Support

Preparation starts before the first session. Families receive induction information in the preceding term, with opportunities for children to meet their teacher and spend time in their new classroom. Teaching staff explain practical arrangements to parents, giving both children and adults some familiarity before the start.

Home learning has a link with classroom activity: the April 2024 nursery plan included sharing the sounds being taught through Tapestry so families could practise them at home. For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), parents can contact the school’s SENCo through the school telephone number or senco@oulton.leeds.sch.uk. This provides a direct route for discussing a child’s needs.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through Leeds City Council’s Pupil Admissions department and meet the normal application deadline. Keep that application separate from arrangements made directly with the nursery.

Preparation for the next classroom is a different matter from admission. The school’s induction arrangements include contact with families in the term before starting Nursery or Reception, alongside opportunities to visit the new teacher and classroom. Those visits help introduce the next stage; they do not secure a place.

Practical Information

The attendance pattern groups nursery time towards the end of the week: Wednesday afternoon followed by full days on Thursday and Friday. Families therefore need a childcare plan that fits those specific days. The school also offers 15-hour places where the eligibility criteria are met.

Nursery applications are handled by the school itself. Parents can leave their child’s details with administrative staff and arrange a nursery visit by appointment. Contact the office on 0113 2821344 or email hello@oulton.leeds.sch.uk to make an enquiry or organise a visit.
