At a Glance

Picture books, shared thinking and music give this nursery day its shape. Children can join from the term following their third birthday, becoming part of Roundhay St John's school rather than attending a separate setting. Nursery children can also use the school's wraparound care, making that school connection useful for working families.

The Nursery Day

Play and adult guidance share the day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guides planning: in practice, children pursue their interests alongside activities led by adults, with opportunities to explore between short teaching sessions in English, phonics and maths. The school aims to build curiosity, independence and confidence in communication. Children's interests help shape what they learn.

Sustained, Shared, Thinking gives adult conversations a specific purpose. Staff demonstrate language and ask questions to help children develop an idea, rather than simply move them through an activity. Picture books introduce other learning, while repeated reading of selected texts gives children more chances to encounter and practise vocabulary. Little Wandle begins in Nursery, providing a named approach to phonics from this early stage.

Music adds another way to participate. Nursery children sing and play instruments both in groups and during play; songs also support early learning in listening, number and phonics. Understanding the World connects learning with familiar surroundings, including home, school and the local community. Stories, role play and small world play help children explore how places differ. These are concrete ways to make early learning relevant to a young child's own experience.

Care and Support

For children with identified SEND before starting in EYFS, preparation begins with a discussion about their needs and existing support. With parental permission, staff can speak to professionals already involved and, where appropriate, visit the child's current setting. A tailored transition package can then be arranged with the family. This gives the starting process a practical focus on the individual child.

Concerns about development go first to the class teacher, who can involve the SEND coordinator when additional provision may help. Support can include vocabulary preparation, movement breaks and extra adult input where needed. Individual Provision Maps, Pupil Passports or Assess, Plan, Do, Review plans give families a defined way to contribute to support and its review.

Physical access is considered across the school: wheelchair-accessible doorways, ramps where needed and a single-level layout sit alongside an accessible toilet. These features matter for families planning how their child will use the school day to day.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Reception admission is a separate application process through Leeds City Council, so families must apply again through the normal school admissions route by the deadline for their child's entry year. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

Practical Information

Two patterns each cover 2.5 days. Nursery 1 runs on Monday and Tuesday from 9am to 3pm, followed by Wednesday from 8.45am to 11.45am. Nursery 2 starts on Wednesday from 12.30pm to 3.30pm, with Thursday and Friday from 9am to 3pm. The Wednesday split is the key detail when fitting sessions around work or other childcare.

Contact the school office on 0113 265 8451 or office@rsjps.com for nursery enquiries. Discoveries handles wraparound enquiries and bookings separately on 07565 025871. Limited on-street parking serves drop-off and collection in a residential area; allow for that constraint when planning the journey.
