Nursery at Rufford Park Primary School

Handprint spiders, nature vocabulary and Dough Disco give Rufford Park’s nursery a distinctive mix of language and practical activity. This is the nursery within Rufford Park Primary School on Rufford Avenue in Yeadon, Leeds. Its curriculum uses The Lost Words to draw attention to plants and creatures, giving children specific things to talk about and explore.
Language is a clear curriculum priority. The nursery aims to build children’s interest in books and their confidence in speaking, with seasonal themes shaped around their interests and needs. It follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), using Development Matters as guidance. For parents, that means learning extends beyond letters and numbers: movement, relationships and communication sit alongside creative activity and finding out about the world.
Twinkl Phonics starts with Level One in nursery. The emphasis is on listening and speaking, laying groundwork for later phonics teaching. Dough Disco develops motor skills, while Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle also supports movement skills. These give physical development a place alongside language. Maths broadly follows White Rose, with early-years opportunities to explore number and pattern both outdoors and indoors.
Creative work makes those curriculum ideas tangible. For the 2026 art exhibition, nursery children responded to Incy Wincey Spider by creating spiders from handprints and suspending them from a large web. In the 2024 exhibition, they combined cut-out shapes with different ways of making marks to produce silhouettes of sea creatures. These are concrete examples of children working with materials and turning a theme into something they can make.
Technology is available during children’s ongoing activity choices. Beebots are among the resources used to explore simple programming.
In July 2022, Ofsted found that early-years activities were thoughtfully matched to children’s changing needs and interests, helping them prepare for later learning. That finding concerns the early years across the school, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
A class teacher and teaching assistant support are part of the nursery team. Across the school, there is also a SENCO and a pastoral lead, giving families identifiable roles for discussions about additional needs and wellbeing.
Personal and social learning includes weekly SCARF lessons from nursery onwards. Topics include Me and My Relationships and Keeping Myself Safe, bringing relationships and safety into planned learning. A school lunch menu is available to all children from September 2026, making meals part of the practical arrangements families can consider.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. For Leeds residents, the route is www.leeds.gov.uk/apply.
Keep the application cycle distinct from nursery enrolment. For entry in September 2026, the closing date was 15 January 2026. Those dates belong to that past intake; nursery attendance should never be treated as a substitute for the Reception application.
