Raindrops for two-year-olds, Puddles for children aged three and four: Athelstan's nursery separates its youngest learners into two age groups within the primary school. Rainbow Wraparound brings nursery children together with Sunshines, the Reception class, for wraparound care. That shared provision gives families a childcare option alongside the nursery sessions.
Ofsted judged early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 1 and 2 March 2023. This was an early years judgement within the school's inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Children's interests shape the learning. In March 2023, the early years curriculum followed a carefully planned sequence, with learning developing across the age groups. For parents, the important combination is purposeful teaching and children absorbed in what they are doing: engagement was exceptional, and children cooperated successfully during play and learning.
Conversation does real teaching work here. Adults used their interactions skilfully to help children become more independent, while relationships between children were positive. These findings give substance to the nursery's educational character: learning includes managing alongside other children and becoming more capable, rather than simply completing activities.
Beyond nursery sessions, after-school sports clubs accept children from nursery age and are led by external specialist coaches. This gives families another activity option alongside the early years provision.
Early Years Foundation Stage staff hold qualifications at Level 3 or above. The school also has an Inclusion Manager, and parents participate in discussions about additional needs with the class teacher and SEND coordinator. Speech and language therapists and educational psychologists are among the professionals the school can consult, giving families routes to specialist advice. Staff change nappies when necessary.
School meals are provided for nursery children attending a full day; eligible children receiving Free School Meals do not pay for them. Children eligible for Early Years Pupil Premium are exempt from snack contributions. These conditions matter when working out the extras attached to attendance.
In March 2023, younger pupils had fewer chances to undertake responsibilities across the school. Expanding those opportunities was an improvement priority, distinct from the positive early years findings about independence.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal school admissions process. North Yorkshire residents apply through North Yorkshire's school admissions service; families living elsewhere apply through their home local authority and can name Athelstan as a preference.
For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is past. Shared Rainbow Wraparound care is a childcare arrangement, not a promise of admission.
Funding covers 38 term-time weeks each year and can be used in Raindrops, Puddles or Rainbow Wraparound. All three- and four-year-olds are eligible for 15 universal funded hours weekly from the start of the term after their third birthday; eligible working families can receive a combined total of 30. Eligible two-year-olds can receive 15 hours through Early Learning funding. Eligibility depends on the funding scheme and family circumstances.
To enquire, use the nursery Contact Form to join the interest list. Before attendance begins, families complete an admission form and Booking Agreement; for funded children, the agreement forms part of the Parental Agreement completed through Funding Loop. Ask the school for current charges.
