Forest School gives this preschool nursery a distinctive school context: St. Oswald’s has extensive outdoor grounds and provides Forest School sessions for all children. The nursery belongs to the Church of England primary school on The Green in Guiseley, Leeds.
Children can join from the start of the month after their third birthday, with monthly entry dependent on space. This gives families a starting point tied to their child’s birthday rather than just a September intake. The school describes its Christian ethos as central to its educational aims, alongside children’s personal development.
Outdoor learning is a concrete feature of the wider school’s approach. Forest School sessions involve a qualified instructor and connect with learning both at home and in class. The approach uses observation to shape supported tasks and encourages children to take considered risks. For a preschool child, this places exploration of the natural world alongside classroom learning.
Reflection is another school-wide thread. ReflectED asks children to think about their learning and record moments that help teachers understand what they enjoy or find difficult. These are features of the school’s educational context, rather than a timetable for an individual nursery session.
Additional needs have a clear route into support. Parents begin by discussing concerns with their child’s teacher; the SEND coordinator can then help decide the next steps. Support does not depend on a diagnosis. That matters for families whose child needs help while an assessment is still being pursued.
The school’s Inclusion Team brings together the SEND coordinator, a Family Support Worker, trained Thrive Practitioners and a children’s counsellor. The Thrive Room provides a physical space for a break, learning in different ways or work on emotional and social skills. These are school-wide resources, with individual support determined around the child’s needs.
Possible provision includes focused group work, specialist programmes and advice from Speech and Language Therapy or an Educational Psychologist. A Support Plan and Target Mat can identify barriers, targets and agreed actions. Plans are revisited at least each term, or sooner where necessary, and parents receive revised copies. This gives families a continuing role in checking how support is working.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority; Leeds residents apply through Leeds City Council at www.leeds.gov.uk/apply.
For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Applications using faith criteria also required a Supplementary Information Form sent to the school by the same deadline, alongside the local authority application. Families should treat the move to Reception as a separate admissions decision when choosing the nursery.
Eligible families can use either 15 or 30 funded hours in the preschool nursery. Entry at the beginning of a month remains dependent on available class spaces, so funding eligibility and a nursery place are separate considerations.
