At a Glance

Language and independence give Swinnow’s nursery its character. In the April 2024 school inspection, early years provision was graded Good, with vocabulary teaching and support for children’s individual needs among its strengths. This was an early years judgement within the school’s inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.

Swinnow Primary School has provision for two-, three- and four-year-olds: a 52-place nursery class for the older children and 24 places for eligible two-year-olds. The nursery occupies a single-storey building behind the main school. That gives the youngest children their own building within the wider school site.

The Nursery Day

Communication has a clear purpose here. In April 2024, adults taught unfamiliar words and connected them with learning across the curriculum, helping children build language they could use beyond one activity. Books were another strength: children enjoyed reading and approached learning enthusiastically. Adults also helped children become independent early in their time in the provision.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the framework for this age group. In parent terms, it brings together learning to communicate, developing physical skills and managing feelings and relationships, alongside early literacy, maths, creative expression and understanding the world. Swinnow’s emphasis on language gives children a foundation for taking part in that learning.

Attendance follows an allocated pattern. Short morning or afternoon sessions offer a different rhythm from a full day, while regular attendance is expected to help children become familiar with routines. For children staying all day, lunch can be brought from home or bought through the school meal service.

Care and Support

Support starts with recognising what an individual child needs. In April 2024, children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) were picked up promptly, and adults adjusted help to the skills and experiences each child needed to develop. Relationships with families supported that work.

For a nursery child with an identified educational need, the teacher meets parents and relevant agencies to plan provision. The school’s SEND approach uses Assess, Plan, Do, Review, bringing parents into decisions about support and its next steps. Concerns can first be discussed with the class teacher, with the SEND coordinator involved as needed.

Practical care includes a hygiene suite in the nursery building. Snacks are free in both the morning and afternoon; families supply items such as wipes and pull-ups for their own child. The on-site Swinnow Children’s Centre also connects families with early help through its Family Outreach team.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Swinnow’s nursery does not guarantee admission to its Reception class. Parents must make a separate application through their home local authority; Leeds families use the Leeds City Council application route. Apply by the deadline for your child’s entry year. For the September 2026 intake, the closing date was 15 January 2026.

Transition support is a separate matter. Nursery staff liaise with the receiving school, share information about the child’s needs and arrange meetings that can include parents. Children are encouraged to visit their next school, and receiving staff can meet them at Swinnow. This helps the next team understand the child before the move.

Practical Information

For three- and four-year-olds, the universal 15-hour offer can be taken as five mornings, 8:30am to 11:30am, or five afternoons, noon to 3pm. Beginning- and end-of-week patterns combine two full days with a Wednesday half-day. Eligible families can take a 30-hour place from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday.

Two-year-olds have morning, afternoon or flexible two-and-a-half-day options. Session flexibility. Allocated sessions cannot be exchanged, and the minimum booking is 15 hours. Choose a pattern that fits your regular week; preferred sessions depend on availability.

There are no compulsory extra charges. Additional sessions can be purchased when space permits, and trip contributions are voluntary. Contact the school office on 0113 3783100 or info@swinnowprimary.com to arrange a viewing or request a nursery waiting-list form.
