At a Glance

Home visits before starting and a clear focus on early reading give Victoria Primary Academy’s nursery its character. The nursery has 26 places and forms part of the school on Ivy Avenue in Leeds. It sits within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework for young children’s learning and development.

Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 27 and 28 September 2022. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision. In September 2022, children followed established routines, concentrated on their learning and developed independence in a settled classroom atmosphere.

The Nursery Day

Reading begins early here. Rocket Phonics is used within EYFS, while the nursery’s reading approach starts with learning how sounds connect to written words. For parents, this means early literacy has a deliberate teaching structure rather than depending only on exposure to books.

Speaking and listening also have their own progression through the BLPP Oracy Intent and Progression Map, beginning in Foundation Stage. Its purpose is to build children’s communication over time. Physical learning includes practising balance, hopping and skipping, alongside throwing, catching and kicking balls. Climbing equipment gives children another way to practise coordinating their movements.

EYFS brings learning and development together: staff assess children as they begin nursery to identify areas needing attention, then check progress each half term. This gives teaching a starting point based on the child’s development. Families receive written updates, and concerns can lead to a targeted plan involving relevant professionals.

Early reading practice. In September 2022, some take-home reading books did not fit the sounds children had learned, making practice harder. Families supporting early reading should keep the match between a child’s phonics knowledge and their practice book in mind.

Care and Support

Settling starts with a conversation at home. Parents of children joining nursery have the opportunity to discuss developmental concerns during a home visit. Children are also offered sessions in EYFS before starting, with extra visits possible where needed. These give families time to share information and children a chance to become familiar with the setting.

For children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the class teacher works with the SENCO and phase leaders to prepare support targets. Plans are reviewed three times a year with families. Support can involve individual work or a group, with specialist advice considered where progress remains difficult. This gives parents regular opportunities to discuss what is helping and what needs adjusting.

Across the school site, ramps provide access to lower areas, including the dining hall. Individual risk assessments address children’s accessibility needs, so practical arrangements can be considered around each child. In September 2022, early years staff also worked with families through workshops explaining children’s learning.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority, keeping nursery attendance and school admission as two distinct decisions. Leeds families apply through www.leeds.gov.uk/apply. For September 2026 entry, the closing date was 15 January 2026; that application cycle is now past.

Preparation for a new class is a separate matter. Information is shared with the next teacher, and children with SEND have their support plans reviewed before the summer term ends. This helps the receiving staff understand the support already in place.

Practical Information

Contact the school office on 0113 248 2449 or email info@vpaleeds.co.uk for nursery enquiries. The academy is on Ivy Avenue, Leeds, LS9 9ER.

The school’s breakfast club is for Reception through Year 6, so families should not count it as nursery wraparound care. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher, or contact the office to speak to the safeguarding team when the concern involves child protection.
