Nursery at Whitkirk Primary School

A purpose-built pre-school and regular Forest School sessions give Whitkirk's nursery its own identity within the primary school. The provision opened in September 2025 on Templegate Walk in Leeds, with 26 places for three-year-olds. Its stated approach is learning through play, with the school aiming to support early development and the move into school life.
Timing matters when considering the inspection judgement. Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding in March 2023, before this pre-school opened. That judgement belongs to the early years provision assessed then.
Play is the starting point for learning here. The nursery's approach places children's early development within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), alongside the practical outdoor experiences of Forest School. For parents, the emphasis is on young children learning through activity and exploration.
Pre-school children have regular Forest School sessions as part of their curriculum. Activities across this provision include investigating wildlife, making dens and practising safe tool use. These give children practical opportunities to explore materials, solve problems and work together outdoors. Friends of Whitkirk has supplied each child with overalls, alongside equipment and storage for outdoor resources. Clothing and tools therefore support the activities, rather than leaving outdoor learning as an occasional addition.
Speech and communication support connects the nursery to the school's inclusion arrangements. Whitkirk works with Talking House for speech and language assessments, intervention planning and additional help. Parents with concerns about learning can begin with the class teacher; where further support is needed, the teacher involves the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) and a meeting follows to discuss a plan. This gives families a clear first step.
Support can involve individual work or small groups, with targets recorded in an individualised provision map. Progress is monitored and discussed with parents. The school's facilities also include a hygiene suite with a bed whose height can be adjusted for children needing assistance with personal care. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than nursery-specific promises.
For children staying for lunch, school meals and food brought from home can be combined across the week. Hutchinson supplies the catering, and the menu cycle includes a meat-free day. School lunches carry a pre-school charge; contact the school for current charges. Packed lunches must exclude nuts, and children eating school meals are supervised by staff. The ability to alternate lunch arrangements gives families some flexibility.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process. For entry in September 2027, applications open on 1 November 2026 and the deadline is 15 January 2027. An online application option is available. Keep this application separate from any nursery booking: familiarity with the school does not secure admission.
The school office handles enquiries on 0113 260 6203 or at office@wps.rklt.co.uk. School meals must be booked before 8:30am each morning, with payments handled through the Arbor Parent Portal/App. This is a useful daily deadline for families choosing a cooked lunch.
