Nursery at Land of Learning Primary School

Nature trails, listening games and an Islamic ethos give Land of Learning’s nursery its own character. The nursery began in 2007 to serve young Muslim children and is now attached to the independent primary school on Evington Drive in Leicester. Faith remains part of its identity, alongside learning about other people and the wider world.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection of 29 April to 1 May 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Speaking and listening have a clear place in the day. Nursery children use Phase 1 of the ALS phonics scheme, with games and activities involving several senses. The emphasis is on hearing, talking and participating, building the skills children need before more formal work with letters and sounds.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) shapes activities across seven connected areas. In parent terms, this brings together learning to communicate, move and manage feelings with early reading, writing, maths, creativity and understanding the world. Relationships and self-care belong alongside numbers and imaginative play. The nursery also uses Development Matters guidance to help adults respond to each child’s development rather than assume everyone progresses at the same pace.
Outdoor learning has a named destination: Brocks Hill Country Park. During autumn and spring, children travel there by bus, explore trails and gather natural materials to use in play. This gives them things to examine and handle, connecting their learning with the natural world. A nursery outing to Windmill Farm took place in 2025, adding another experience beyond the classroom.
The wider early years findings in April and May 2025 showed children concentrating for extended stretches and discussing ideas in detail. Staff used questions and clear explanations to develop understanding. One child explained the connection between sunlight, solar panels and electricity: a concrete example of language being used to express a complex idea.
Qualified practitioners form the nursery team. Children’s progress is checked regularly, with additional help planned around individual needs. For children with special educational needs, support can include individual work with an adult. That makes the child’s own development the starting point for support.
The nursery works with EYST (the Early Years Support Team) and SALT (speech and language therapists). Planning is adapted to support participation, and children with disabilities have specialised resources. Stay and play sessions also form part of nursery life, giving families a shared activity with their children.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Ask the school about Reception admission requirements and deadlines. Treat choosing the nursery and securing a school place as separate decisions.
For children moving into Land of Learning’s Reception, summer-term visits introduce the classrooms, staff and play areas. Nursery and Reception teams also discuss each child’s learning and development. Familiarity with people and spaces can help make the change less abrupt; this transition work does not itself establish an admissions advantage.
