At a Glance

Outdoor play follows the children’s day here, rather than a fixed break bell. Clipstone Brook’s early years children can play outside throughout their sessions, while pre-school children usually skip assembly. That gives the nursery a different rhythm from the older classes around it.

The school’s own pre-school caters for children aged three to four, with 16 nursery places alongside the main school. Based at Brooklands Drive in Leighton Buzzard, it offers morning, afternoon and all-day attendance. Families can choose a shorter session or a day that includes lunch.

The Nursery Day

Stories, themed learning and games shape classroom activity. The curriculum uses the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with practical examples that make its learning areas easier for parents to picture: Expressive Arts and Design includes exploring materials, trying tools and investigating colour and texture. Children learn through handling and experimenting, as well as listening.

Read Write Inc provides the named approach to early literacy. Daily phonics is part of Foundation Stage teaching, connecting spoken sounds with written letters. Alongside that structured work, the pre-school’s stories and play activities give children other ways to join in with learning.

Outside, early years play has no scheduled break. The wider school grounds also contain a wooded area and a pond, the setting for its Forest School provision. The Forest School programme offers every child the option to participate, with activities planned over time including natural art, storytelling and building dens. These are opportunities to explore and make choices; they should not be read as a fixed nursery timetable.

Early writing. The Ofsted inspection on 11 and 12 March 2025 identified weaknesses in the school’s early writing teaching, including gaps in spelling knowledge. More consistent teaching and closer checks on progress were required, making early writing a useful focus for conversations about a child’s development.

Care and Support

A teacher and teaching assistant feature in the pre-school team, with a level 3 childcare qualification recorded for the assistant. Pre-school staff have DBS checks and paediatric first-aid training. In March 2025, Ofsted found early years children comfortable and content, interested in their activities, and receiving effective additional help when needed.

Lunch comes with a choice. Children staying full time can attend lunch club between 11:40am and 12:20pm, bringing a healthy packed lunch or having a paid hot meal ordered through SchoolGrid. A healthy snack is supplied free, and the school asks families to send a labelled bottle containing water. Food brought in must be nut free.

Parents can speak with the teacher after a session; longer discussions can be arranged separately. The school’s communication arrangements include termly overview reports, a fuller summer report and two parents’ evenings each year. For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the SENCO is accessible through the office, giving families a direct route to discuss support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Central Bedfordshire Council’s normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. The council allocates Reception places, so a nursery booking should be treated separately from the next school application.

For the September 2025 Reception intake, transition included a classroom play session and Meet the Teacher opportunity before starting. Parents and carers also had a welcome meeting covering practical information. Those activities supported familiarity with the new classroom and adults; they were separate from the allocation of places.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:40am to 11:40am, afternoons from 12:20pm to 3:20pm, and all-day attendance from 8:40am to 3:20pm. Drop-off and collection follow the session booked. The pre-school accepts both part-time and full-time bookings.

The pre-school’s funding offer describes 15 hours from the term after a child’s third birthday, with 30 hours for eligible working parents or carers of three- and four-year-olds. Non-funded sessions, lunch club and hot meals carry charges; contact the school for current charges.

To enquire about spaces or arrange a visit, call 01525 376085 or email office@clipstonebrooklower.co.uk. Applications are returned to the school office. If another adult will collect your child, notify the office by phone or email, ideally before 10am, so the message reaches the classroom.
