Two open-plan classrooms and a pod in Forest School give Pulford’s pre-school two distinct settings for learning. This is the school’s own nursery provision in Leighton Buzzard, with an outdoor area connecting it to the Reception classrooms. The usual starting point is the term of a child’s third birthday, with intakes each term; younger children may be offered sessions in the preceding term if space permits.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 7 and 8 November 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Learning has space to move outdoors. Alongside the classrooms, the pre-school uses an equipped outdoor pod in the wooded Forest School area. It gives children another place to learn beyond their usual rooms. The January to March 2026 Forest School timetable included separate pre-school groups, showing how outdoor sessions were organised during that period.
The school’s 2021 curriculum statement describes the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) as the framework for pre-school learning. Its focus brings together language, physical development and relationships alongside early literacy, maths, creative work and exploration of the world. Continuous provision means children return to activities and practise skills across the year, rather than encountering them only in a single lesson. Independence and problem-solving are among its aims.
Language support has a named programme: the early years team has training in Lift off to Language. For children needing help with communication, that provides a specific approach around which staff can plan support. In November 2023, understanding routines and their purpose began in early years, giving children a foundation for managing the shared day.
Stay and Play sessions let parents share their child’s needs with pre-school staff. The team includes a pre-school teacher, play leader and assistant, while the pre-school SEND coordinator works with the school’s SEND coordinator. Families can therefore raise additional needs with staff responsible for the nursery as well as the wider school.
The January 2026 learning support policy provides for SEND support plans to be reviewed with parents at least once each term. External advice is sought with parental consultation and consent. This gives families a recurring opportunity to discuss support and adjust it around their child.
Lunch can be cooked on site or brought from home. The pre-school application form identifies Clotamus Kitchen as the hot-lunch provider and allows for special dietary needs. Staying for lunch carries a charge, including when parents supply a packed lunch. Pre-school children are outside the universal free school meals scheme, so lunch needs to be considered separately from funded sessions.
Physical access. The 2025–2026 SEND statement identifies the upstairs pre-school area as inaccessible to wheelchair users. Families with mobility needs should discuss access before entry; the accessibility plan provides for meetings in rooms reached on one level.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Under the September 2027 admission arrangements, parents must apply again, and pre-school attendance is not an oversubscription priority. Familiarity with the school and entitlement to a place are separate matters.
For September 2027 entry, apply through the local authority where you live by 15 January 2027. Central Bedfordshire residents use its coordinated admissions scheme; families elsewhere apply through their own authority.
Transition support addresses children’s needs separately from allocation. Stay and Play and open mornings give parents opportunities to brief staff, and children with highly complex needs may have a meeting involving their family, pre-school placement and SEND coordinator.
Morning, afternoon and all-day attendance are options. The pre-school application form lists weekday sessions of 8:45–11:45am and 12:15–3:15pm, with lunch between 11:45am and 12:15pm. Parents indicate preferred sessions, but allocation depends on what can be accommodated, so flexibility may help.
The February 2023 form describes universal funding for eligible three- and four-year-olds from the term after their third birthday, covering five sessions a week; some families may qualify for 30 funded hours. Additional sessions are charged. Ask the school for current charges. The February 2023 form required advance payment and payment for missed booked sessions. Confirm current booking and payment terms with the school.
Uniform is expected. Forest School clothing includes waterproofs and Wellington boots, making outdoor kit part of preparing for the day. Contact the office on 01525 372188 or office@pulfordschool.org for enquiries; visits can be arranged by telephone.
The usual start is the term in which children turn three. Sessions may be offered in the term before that birthday if space allows.
The pre-school application form lists Monday to Friday mornings from 8:45–11:45am and afternoons from 12:15–3:15pm, with a lunchtime session from 11:45am–12:15pm. All-day attendance is also an option.
Yes. Clotamus Kitchen prepares hot lunches on site and can accommodate special dietary needs. Packed lunches are another option. Both options involve a charge for the lunch session.
No. The September 2027 arrangements do not give priority for pre-school attendance, and attendance does not guarantee a place. A separate application through your home local authority is required by 15 January 2027 for that entry cycle.
Parents can share information during Stay and Play sessions or contact the school office to discuss support with the SEND team. SEND support plans are reviewed with parents at least once per term.
