Baby Bugs, Creative Caterpillars and Busy Butterflies give Anfield Road’s nursery its own identity within the primary school. Provision includes places for two-year-olds, so this is also a starting point for younger children beginning school life. The school occupies a Victorian building with a distinctive bell tower in Anfield, Liverpool.
The early years provision was judged Requires improvement at the Ofsted inspection on 1 and 2 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. For families, the important distinction is between children settling into routines and the support they receive to develop language.
Routines were a positive feature in October 2024. Children starting in early years became familiar with school expectations quickly and settled into school life. That gives families a useful indication of how children adjusted to the structure of the day at that time.
Language teaching needs closer attention. In October 2024, communication support varied across the nursery provision, including for children aged two. Children needing the most help with language were struggling to communicate adequately with other children. The practical concern is participation: being able to talk with peers matters alongside becoming comfortable with routines.
Communication and assessment. Some children beginning to acquire language had too few opportunities to practise it, and needed teaching that broadened their vocabulary. Checks on learning also needed strengthening in parts of the early years curriculum because gaps in understanding were being missed. These are useful points to keep in view when discussing a child’s progress, especially if speech and interaction are already concerns.
Getting to know the nursery begins before the start date. After a place is confirmed, families attend an induction with their child to see the nursery and meet its staff. A home visit follows, involving the Nursery Manager and class teacher. Start dates and preparation for nursery are discussed during that visit, giving the family contact with the team both at school and at home.
Leadership connects early years and inclusion: the EYFS lead also holds a SENDCo role, alongside a wider SENDCo team. This gives parents an identifiable team structure for conversations about additional needs, rather than leaving support as an abstract promise.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application for Reception through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions; confirmation of a nursery place is not confirmation of a later school place.
Nursery hours run from 8:30am to 3:25pm. Intakes are usually in September, January and April. Nursery enquiries go to admissions@anfieldroadprimary.co.uk, and the initial step is an EYFS expression of interest form.
L4 After School Club accepts nursery children only by special request, with enquiries directed to L4@anfieldroadprimary.co.uk. Approved sessions must be booked ahead through ParentPay; adding funds alone does not reserve a session. Families considering this paid provision should obtain current charges from the school.
