Nursery at Broadgreen Primary

At the September 2022 inspection, tomato growing, outdoor marshmallow toasting and Foodie Fridays gave Broadgreen’s early years a practical, sensory character. Books and conversation sit alongside those experiences. For a child beginning school life, there is something concrete to explore as well as something new to say.
The nursery forms FS1 within Broadgreen Primary on Oakhill Road in Old Swan, Liverpool. Its class is called Strawberry Fields, and the foundation stage has capacity for 52 part-time nursery pupils, alongside a limited allocation of 30-hour places. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 28 and 29 September 2022; that judgement covers early years within the school.
Morning and afternoon sessions give families a choice of shorter nursery days. A limited number of term-time places cover the longer day. Learning combines early reading with discovery through play: in September 2022, children in early years enjoyed playing with friends and exploring their surroundings, with frequent opportunities to extend their vocabulary and practise communication.
Read Write Inc begins in nursery. The programme introduces phonics, connecting spoken sounds with early reading, while assessments every six to eight weeks help staff organise teaching groups around children’s understanding. Reading has a physical place too: each class has a Reading for Pleasure area, putting books within the classroom rather than treating them solely as lesson materials.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) work described here includes understanding familiar places and noticing changes in nature. Geography starts with family and the nearby environment, using an inquiry approach. Growing tomatoes provides a tangible example of that exploration. Foodie Fridays, described in September 2022, introduced children to different foods, giving tasting and discovery a place alongside outdoor activity.
Preparation for starting nursery includes a Welcome to Nursery Video, a Welcome to Nursery Booklet and a My New Class SEND Booklet. These give families material to share with their child before the change, making the new class something they can begin discussing together.
Additional support sits within the school’s SEND structure. A Pupil Profile identifies needs and planned provision for children on the SEND Register and is shared with families each term. The school’s support options include individual tuition and small-group teaching, with external specialists involved where needed. A pastoral support role also works across year groups, giving families another route for welfare concerns.
School lunches are cooked on site each day by the catering team. In September 2022, inspectors described early years children sampling different foods through Foodie Fridays, a learning activity separate from the school’s lunch arrangements.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not feature among the school’s oversubscription priorities. Families must apply separately through the Local Authority Admissions Team. The arrangements give priority to children in local authority care, exceptional medical or social circumstances, and siblings, with other applicants considered after those groups and distance used where necessary.
For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle has passed. Transition support is a separate matter: Reception welcome videos and booklets, class SEND materials and a transition social story give families ways to prepare children for moving classes.
