Nursery at Greenbank Primary School

Daily outdoor learning and a focus on children's first conversations give Greenbank's nursery its character. The purpose-built provision belongs to Greenbank Primary School on Mossley Avenue, Liverpool. It has 30 part-time places alongside a number of full-time places, with children joining after their third birthday when space permits.
Morning and afternoon nursery classes form part of the school's early years foundation stage (EYFS). At the Ofsted inspection on 2 and 3 July 2024, early years provision was judged Good. That judgement covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play shapes the learning here. Adults combine planned topics with children's own interests, so a session includes opportunities to explore independently as well as learning chosen by staff. The EYFS covers communication, movement and personal development alongside early reading and writing, maths, creativity and understanding the world. In parent terms, learning to talk, manage feelings and use the body belongs alongside learning about numbers and stories.
Language receives sustained attention from the Nursery Year. In July 2024, children in early years practised unfamiliar vocabulary aloud and took pleasure in sharing new words. Staff also helped them maintain their attention. These are useful foundations for joining conversations and taking part in learning.
A large outdoor space is shared by the early years classes and used each day, whatever the weather. Outdoor learning therefore belongs to the regular routine. Children need a waterproof coat; learning to put it on and fasten it is also part of the independence the school encourages.
The nursery team includes teaching staff, a higher level teaching assistant and classroom assistants. Personal care receives practical attention: the school asks families to help children recognise their belongings, manage shoes and coats, use the toilet and wash their hands independently. The emphasis is on helping children take charge of familiar tasks.
Fresh fruit is offered during sessions, and drinking water is accessible throughout the day. Children staying for wraparound provision have lunchtime from 11:30am to 12:30pm, giving the longer day a distinct meal break.
Parents can join Stay and Play sessions and workshops. A Home School Link Book goes home each week with learning updates and ways to support learning at home, making the connection between nursery activities and family life concrete. The school's special educational needs coordinator manages SEND provision and provides a contact route for families with concerns about additional needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Greenbank. Families must make a separate application through Liverpool City Council's online admissions process; the local authority decides the places. Families unable to apply online can request a paper form from the admissions team.
The shared early years outdoor area gives nursery children a connection with the wider early years setting. Keep that everyday familiarity separate from the application decision: a nursery place carries no automatic entitlement to Reception.
The 15-hour pattern is five mornings or five afternoons. Morning sessions run from 8:40am to 11:40am; afternoons run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The wraparound/30-hour session runs from 8:40am to 3:30pm. These fixed patterns give families clear start and finish times for planning childcare.
Eligible families using 30-hour provision must supply their eligibility code and National Insurance number. Families who do not qualify can pay for additional hours; contact the school office for current charges. Nursery enquiries and visits are arranged through the office on 0151 522 5748.
Uniform consists of a maroon or Greenbank sweatshirt, a white polo top and maroon jogging bottoms. Kitted Out on Bleasdale Road supplies uniform, while unbranded maroon items can also be bought from supermarkets or online retailers. Label belongings and pack a bag, refillable water bottle and waterproof coat. In winter, add gloves and a scarf so children are equipped for daily outdoor learning.
Children can join after their third birthday, subject to a place being available.
