Nursery at Holy Name Catholic Primary School

At a Glance

Child-chosen play and planned daily activities share the nursery day at Holy Name. This is the school's own nursery in Fazakerley, Liverpool, with morning and afternoon sessions rather than a single compulsory school-day timetable. For families choosing an introduction to school, that session structure is a practical starting point.

Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 28 and 29 March 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines activities organised by adults with play directed by children. Its seven areas cover language and communication, physical skills, social and emotional development, understanding the world, mathematics, literacy and creative expression. In parent terms, learning encompasses how children communicate, move and relate to others as well as their early work with numbers and words.

Language starts early here. In March 2023, children began developing language skills as soon as they joined nursery. The curriculum page also provides a Nursery Maths Curriculum Map and a Nursery Curriculum book focus, giving number work and books identifiable places in the learning programme. These sit alongside children's own choices in play.

Catholic education has a named programme: Come and See. Its activities include dance, storytelling, music and art, connecting religious learning with forms of expression young children can use. This gives families a concrete sense of how the school's faith character enters learning.

Curriculum sequencing. In March 2023, learning in a minority of subjects needed clearer organisation, including its early years starting points. Some pupils consequently struggled to connect new knowledge with earlier learning. The relevant consideration for parents is how activities build on what children already understand.

Care and Support

Nursery children adapted quickly to routines in March 2023, and adults maintained a calm atmosphere for learning across early years. That matters for a child getting used to the expectations of a group session.

ClassDojo carries information to parents. For additional needs, an Early Years SENDCo can be contacted through the school office. The school's support arrangements include individual work, small groups and specialist services such as Speech and Language Therapy and SENISS. These provide different routes for addressing a child's needs rather than relying on one form of support.

Accessibility measures across the school include ramped access to the main buildings and adapted toilet facilities. These are practical features for families considering physical access.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Under the September 2027 arrangements, it is not an oversubscription priority either. Families must apply separately through their home local authority using its Common Application Form, by 15 January 2027.

A Supplementary Information Form is also requested for applications under faith criteria 2 to 6, with supporting documentation due by the same date. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two separate decisions.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon session runs from noon to 3pm. Each has its own finish time, so collection needs to fit the chosen session.

General enquiries go through the school office on 0151 525 3545 or holyname-ao@holyname.liverpool.sch.uk. The school is on Moss Pits Lane, Fazakerley, Liverpool, L10 9LG.
