Stories, shared books and carefully chosen vocabulary give Kensington Primary School’s early years provision its clearest character. The nursery forms part of the primary school on Brae Street in Liverpool. Its day can mean a morning session, an afternoon session or a longer day for children who qualify for 30 hours.
Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 20 and 21 March 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than being a separate nursery rating.
Language is a clear focus. In March 2024, early years staff deliberately demonstrated the words children were learning, using opportunities throughout their teaching to develop speaking and understanding. For parents, the useful distinction is that vocabulary receives active attention: adults give children examples of language to use themselves.
Books provide another concrete thread. Early years children heard stories regularly and shared books together, developing an interest in reading. Listening and sharing are the activities here, with enjoyment of books forming part of early learning rather than reading being treated only as a later skill.
The school’s broader curriculum aims draw on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile, including respect for oneself, other people and the surrounding world. This is a school-wide ambition. The clearest early years examples are the work on vocabulary and the shared reading experiences.
Teaching consistency. In March 2024, some teaching choices across the school did not help pupils grasp curriculum content deeply enough. Improving how consistently staff translated the curriculum into learning was an identified action for the school.
The SENCO leads SEND provision across the school. Kensington aims to meet children’s additional needs within mainstream education, giving families a school-level contact for discussing support. Liverpool Family Hubs and the Liverpool Information and SEND Directory provide further routes to family support and information.
Behaviour. In March 2024, children in early years generally behaved well. Across the school, occasional disruption affected learning, and applying the behaviour policy more consistently remained an improvement priority. Families should weigh that qualification alongside the positive early years finding.
Lunch has a practical requirement: children who qualify for the 30-hour day must bring a packed lunch. That makes preparing food part of the family’s daily routine.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process; choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about nursery provision itself.
For entry in September 2026, the application deadline was 15 January 2026, using Liverpool’s online admissions route. That cycle is now past. The school office offers help with completing Reception applications, which gives parents a practical source of assistance with the process.
Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoon sessions run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. These provide distinct options for arranging the rest of the family’s day. For children who qualify for 30 hours, attendance runs from 9am to 3:30pm, with the packed-lunch requirement attached to that option.
