Nursery at Ranworth Square Primary School

Speech and language support gives Ranworth Square’s nursery a specific focus. A specialist practitioner supports language development and helps staff build communication strategies into classroom life. For children developing their vocabulary, that connects specialist input with everyday learning.
This is the school’s own nursery in Norris Green, Liverpool, within its early years provision. The nursery roll was 14 in September 2024, a dated headcount rather than a measure of places available. Its staffing sits within the school’s teaching and support structure.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) gives learning its shape. In parent terms, it brings together talking and listening, movement, relationships and emotional development, alongside early reading and writing, maths, creative expression and discovering how the world works. These areas connect: learning to communicate matters both when joining play and when explaining an idea.
Indoor and outdoor spaces both feature in the early years day. At the June 2023 inspection, teacher-organised early years activities attracted enthusiastic participation. Equipped classrooms and outdoor space also allowed children to play together and build social connections. That gives the day a social purpose as well as a learning one.
Language support has named components. The school’s 2025/26 SEND Information Report includes Language Box work and Attention Autism sessions within EYFS provision. These are specific support activities, rather than a description of what every nursery child receives. The curriculum also includes help from a specialist speech and language practitioner, linking classroom strategies with children’s communication needs.
Settling starts with children and parents together. Play and stay sessions are arranged for families joining the nursery, giving them an opportunity to become familiar with the setting before the child starts. In June 2023, early years children became comfortable promptly and learnt the expectations and routines of their day.
A teacher and at least one teaching or learning support assistant are assigned to each class, including Nursery, under the staffing model in the 2025/26 SEND Information Report. For families, that places nursery care within a classroom team.
Parents take part in planning additional support. The 2025/26 SEND Policy uses an Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle: staff identify needs, agree a plan with parents, put support into practice and revisit progress. The corresponding information report provides termly SEND reviews and lists visual timetables, communication boards and movement breaks among possible adjustments. Support can therefore address how a child understands the day as well as how they participate in learning.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Liverpool City Council’s online admissions process, and Liverpool’s admissions criteria determine allocation. Treat the Reception application as a separate task and meet the deadline for the relevant intake.
Transition work is a different matter. The school’s 2025/26 SEND Information Report records Reception staff visiting nursery settings to meet children’s key workers. This supports information sharing ahead of the move to Reception; it does not secure admission.
The nursery morning runs from 8:30am to 11:30am. This is a nursery-specific timetable, useful when planning the family’s morning and collection arrangements.
Working parents can follow the EYFS page’s application link for 30 hours of nursery education. The school office handles enquiries on 0151 226 1740 or ranworth-ao@ranworthsquare.liverpool.sch.uk, and visits can be arranged through the office.
Early collection requires advance arrangement. Parents are also excluded from the yard between noon and 1pm, so collection plans need to take that school rule into account.
