Finding a hiding place for Mr Wolf and making maps of the school grounds give St Cleopas’ nursery learning a concrete starting point: children explore familiar places, then represent what they have discovered. Stories become activities.
Children can join when they turn 3. The nursery belongs to the academy’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), alongside Reception, on Beresford Road in Liverpool. Its Church of England character also reaches the nursery timetable through religious education and collective worship.
The session combines time to explore play resources with focused teaching. Maths, phonics and literacy sit alongside stories, songs and outdoor activity, with snack and nappy care included in the routine. Early reading is a stated priority. This gives families a picture of learning and everyday care sharing the same session.
Within the EYFS, children learn through activities they choose and tasks adults direct. Making things includes choosing materials, planning a construction and learning to handle simple tools safely. Food preparation brings hygiene into practical learning. These are opportunities to try ideas and make decisions, rather than simply watch an adult demonstrate.
Books provide a route into the wider world. We're Going on a Bear Hunt and The Three Billy Goats Gruff introduce journeys, nature and the language of place. Nursery children have explored the school grounds and made messy maps showing the features they found. Outdoor exploration therefore connects directly with talking and drawing back in class.
The nursery’s geography progression uses Birth to 5, Range 5. It includes recalling experiences, discussing story characters and using drawings or early writing in play. For parents, that connects familiar childhood activities with specific learning: explaining what happened, talking about a story and giving marks meaning.
A teacher works with nursery children, and a learning support assistant has a nursery role. Parents can follow recorded learning through an online journal, giving them a way to discuss classroom experiences at home.
Fruit and milk are free. Other healthy snacks carry a charge, while families are expected to supply nappies, wipes and sun cream when their child needs them. Nappy care also appears within the session routine, so practical care is included alongside learning.
For children needing additional support, the school uses a Graduated Approach: staff identify needs, plan support, put it into practice and review it. Parents are invited to meet the SENCo at least once each term. That creates repeated opportunities to discuss whether support needs adjusting. Children learning English as an additional language are assessed termly in the EYFS using NASSEA; their language needs are considered separately from SEND.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery attendance is not a priority criterion: allocation considers specified medical or social needs, siblings and distance from home. Families must make a separate Reception application through the local authority and meet the deadline for their entry year.
For September 2025 entry, Liverpool’s closing date was 15 January 2025. Liverpool residents could apply online at liverpool.gov.uk/admissions or request a paper form; families living elsewhere applied through their home local authority. The nursery decision and the Reception application need separate planning.
Morning sessions run from 8:30 to 11:30, and afternoon sessions from 12:15 to 15:15. Children attend either session. The nursery also offers 30-hour places; contact the school office about taking up a place and booking a visit.
Additional charges. Hours beyond funded entitlement are charged separately. Trips, special visitors and celebrations may also incur charges, depending on factors including transport, with parents informed when activities are booked. Ask the school for current charges before committing to additional hours or activities.
