Cooperative play and counting through The Very Hungry Caterpillar give Garfield’s early years a concrete character: children learn alongside one another, with stories bringing number ideas into focus. The nursery belongs to Garfield Primary School on Upper Park Road in New Southgate. Children enter in September after their third birthday, and the provision can admit up to 52 children.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 1 and 2 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
The morning option runs from 8.45am to 11.45am. For families eligible for the extended entitlement, the longer day finishes at 2.45pm, giving children six hours rather than three. The choice therefore changes how much of the day a child spends here, with a packed lunch required for the longer pattern.
In October 2024, early years children showed curiosity and enjoyed playing together. Mathematics included using The Very Hungry Caterpillar to practise counting to seven and beyond, alongside comparing quantities. A familiar story gives these number activities a concrete starting point: children connect counting with the ideas of more and less.
Children taking the extended 30-hour place bring their own packed lunch. For those families, preparing food is part of the daily routine rather than relying on a nursery meal.
Inclusion enquiries go through the school office to the deputy head responsible for inclusion and safeguarding. This gives parents a specific contact route for discussing support needs. General enquiries are handled by the office manager, using the same office email address and telephone number.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place, and it does not confer priority under the admission criteria listed by the school. Families must make a separate application through eAdmissions by 15 January for autumn entry. Familiarity with Garfield does not replace that application.
Allocation follows Enfield’s criteria. These consider care status, exceptional medical circumstances, siblings already attending, qualifying parental employment at the school and distance from home. For the staff criterion, the parent must have worked at Garfield for at least two years. Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan naming the school are offered a place through the separate statutory process.
The shorter pattern provides 15 hours each week; eligible families can apply for 30 hours. Extended places are limited and allocated in application order. Parents need an eligibility code and must return the 30-hour application form to the office, so eligibility alone is not the final booking step.
Families eligible for the extended entitlement can also pay for the additional period from 2.45pm to 3.20pm. Ask the school for current charges. To arrange a school tour, call 0208 368 4500 or email office@garfield.enfield.sch.uk. The office is also the route for nursery enquiries.
