Playing alongside older children gives Gordon’s early years provision a place within the wider school. In November 2023, early years children mixed successfully with older pupils in both work and play. For families choosing a school nursery, that offers an introduction to school life beyond their own group.
Gordon Primary School in Eltham has nursery provision, with the school’s starting age recorded as three. Ofsted graded its early years provision Good following the inspection on 1 and 2 November 2023. This judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately graded nursery.
Early routines give the day its structure. In November 2023, children adapted promptly to early years, with familiar routines introduced from the start. That matters for a child learning how a school session works: the expectations begin early.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) organises children’s learning into seven areas: three prime and four specific. Nursery children practise following familiar tunes when singing. They also experiment with mixing colours and choose materials to turn their ideas into creations. This gives children ways to express themselves through music and making. Gordon uses regular observations and assessments across these areas to track development. For parents, this means staff build their picture of learning by watching what children can do, alongside assessment. For children with SEND, the school-wide offer includes social skills groups, life skills sessions and interactive music making to support social and emotional development. Work and play with older pupils also form part of the early years experience described in November 2023.
For children starting with identified special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), preparation begins before their first session. Families are invited to look around with their child and talk to staff. Where professionals already support the child, a meeting brings together their advice so arrangements can be made before the start.
A key person may visit the family at home or make contact through a visit to the child’s existing setting. The settling period can also be adjusted. These are conditional steps for children with identified needs, allowing the start to respond to the individual child.
Parents can raise learning concerns first with the class teacher or key worker, then with the SENCO or Inclusion Manager. Support can involve Speech and Language Therapy or the Sensory Service, depending on need. In November 2023, early years children with SEND participated alongside their peers throughout school life.
Physical provision across the school includes ramps, a hygiene suite and rooms with acoustic treatment for deaf pupils. A sensory room and a nurture room are also part of the school’s facilities. These are school resources, rather than rooms identified as belonging to the nursery.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception process. For September 2027 entry, children born from 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023 need an application to the Royal Borough of Greenwich by 15 January 2027.
For children with SEND changing classes within Gordon, learning plans and information go to the next teacher in advance. A planning meeting usually takes place; a book or video can be prepared where it would help the child understand the change. This supports transition and is separate from securing admission.
Gordon advertises nursery places covering 15 or 30 hours. Its Admissions page links to childcare eligibility information and the nursery application form.
