At a Glance

Child-led play and daily work with stories and rhymes give Linton Mead’s nursery its character. This is the school’s own Nursery class in Thamesmead, with entry at the start of the autumn term after a child’s third birthday, subject to places being available. Morning attendance totals 15 hours each week, spread across every day rather than a few selected days.

The early years provision received a Good judgement at Ofsted’s November 2022 inspection. That judgement covers the school’s early years, rather than a separately inspected nursery. For families, the practical attraction is a regular morning pattern combined with learning that starts from children’s interests.

The Nursery Day

The 2022-2023 curriculum plan describes an Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach built mainly around play chosen by children, alongside activities guided or led by adults. In parent terms, children have room to choose resources and develop activities with other children; adults also plan opportunities to extend their learning.

Planning in the Moment is the named approach. Staff respond to what a child is already absorbed in, using conversation to explore their understanding and move it forward. The plan includes outdoor and indoor play in different weather conditions, making the outdoor area part of learning rather than simply a break from it.

Early reading has a more specific daily thread. Nursery children use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised through its Foundations for Phonics guidance. Stories, rhymes and daily oral blending develop language and introduce the task of joining sounds together. This gives parents a concrete picture of early reading preparation alongside the play.

In November 2022, language development was a clear early years strength. Activities and resources built communication gradually, and adults used the outdoor environment to encourage children’s talk. Children maintained their attention during both independent tasks and activities with adults.

Care and Support

Settling was supported by familiar routines in November 2022, when children became comfortable quickly. Learning to handle feelings was part of the early years day. These details matter for a child beginning group provision: emotional adjustment and participation in activities were addressed together.

For additional needs, the school’s SEND approach includes working with families and external agencies to understand each child and arrange support. Parents can contact the SENDCo at senco@lintonmead.greenwich.sch.uk. School correspondence arrives by email through ParentPay, so activating an account is a practical part of keeping in touch.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process. The route is the Royal Greenwich Borough admissions website, with applications opening in September and closing on 15 January.

Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions. The nursery admissions page explicitly warns against automatic progression, so families should keep the Reception deadline in their plans even while their child attends nursery.

Practical Information

Attendance pattern. The nursery operates in term time, with mornings across every day and 15 hours each week. This pattern suits families seeking regular mornings; arrangements for the rest of the day need to fit around it.

Register interest through admin@lintonmead.greenwich.sch.uk or call 020 8310 1902. General school visits can also be arranged by telephone. A nursery application goes to the office by January for an autumn start; later applications are considered after the initial allocation. Acceptance of the application requires a birth certificate and address evidence.

Foundation Stage clothing includes navy jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt, a white polo shirt and black trainers with Velcro fastenings. The kit list also includes wellies and a navy PE bag holding spare clothes and shoes. These are useful preparations for the mix of indoor and outdoor activity.
