Nursery at Meridian Primary School

Playful teaching and an individual start shape Meridian’s nursery offer. A qualified early years teacher leads the team, with learning through play and playful teaching. This is the school’s Foundation 1 provision in Greenwich, for children aged three and four; entry begins in the term following a child’s third birthday, subject to space.
The July 2018 admissions policy describes capacity for 30 children in each of the morning and afternoon groups. The current booking offer centres on morning places and longer days. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding in September 2022: that judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Exploration gives the day its direction. Planning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which here means developing children’s communication, relationships, movement and understanding through practical experiences. Adults observe children’s learning, giving them a basis for deciding what to introduce next.
The Foundation Stage autumn plan turns that approach into recognisable activities: reciting poems and nursery rhymes, exploring nature through the senses, and clapping the syllables in words. Meridian uses the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme. These activities connect listening and speaking with the beginnings of reading.
Books also carry weight. In September 2022, engaging books and ambitious expectations were features of the early-years teaching. Creative work extends into the outdoor area, where the Foundation Stage plan includes making art. Learning also reaches beyond the school: the 2025/26 nursery diary included an autumn walk in Greenwich Park and a visit to the Cutty Sark. Those are examples from that year’s programme, rather than promises for the next intake.
Starting arrangements give parents time with the teaching team. The admissions policy provides for a visit with the child and an individual teacher meeting before entry, while the nursery information describes a start adapted to each child. Parents can explain routines and concerns before the first session.
For children with SEND, the October 2025 policy includes a pre-entry teacher meeting, with the SENCo involved where appropriate. Individual Education Plans are reviewed each term with families. Deaf nursery children have a specific routine: a 45-minute settling session in the Rocking Horse Room precedes joining the mainstream nursery. This separates specialist support from the rest of their shared day.
Chartwells Schools supplies school meals, with cooked food or a packed lunch chosen at the beginning of term. Nursery lunch is available only to full-day children and is charged unless they qualify for free school meals; ask the school for current charges. Vegetarian meals are included, and families can contact the medical diet team about allergies or intolerances. Children under five receive free milk, and drinking water is accessible during the day. These are useful details for planning a full-day place.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the Royal Borough of Greenwich; Greenwich Admissions allocates places centrally. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as two separate decisions.
Transition support is a different matter. For children with SEN moving between classes, the school’s policy provides for staff handovers, an opportunity to meet the next teacher and see the classroom, and a transition booklet where appropriate. These arrangements help prepare a child for change; they do not secure admission.
The nursery admissions offer is term time, with a 15-hour morning place running from 9am to noon. The school lists the full-time, 30-hour pattern as 9am to 3.15pm, while the school-day page gives nursery hours of 8.50am to 3.20pm. Confirm drop-off and collection times with the office before arranging care or work. Eligible families need to supply their entitlement code and complete the parental declaration; paid additional hours are another option.
Payment commitments. Top-up charges are due monthly in advance and remain payable during absence. Ending a top-up place requires four weeks’ written notice, with charges continuing through that period. Ask the school for current charges before agreeing the booking.
Parents take nursery children into their classroom; full-time collection is from the main playground. Meridian has no school uniform. For enquiries, use the nursery application form or contact the office on 020 88583572 or sao@meridian.greenwich.sch.uk. Nursery tours can also be requested through the booking form or by telephone.
Children can join at the beginning of the term after turning three, subject to places being available.
