Nursery at Montbelle Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Morning or afternoon, with some full-time places: Montbelle’s nursery gives families more than one attendance pattern within a primary school setting. Children can start in the term following their third birthday. The school’s 2024-2025 SEND information report lists 26 morning places and 26 afternoon places, figures that describe the provision rather than vacancies.

The nursery belongs to the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with a nursery teacher and classroom support staff organised within the early years team.

The Nursery Day

Three-hour sessions give the part-time day a clear boundary. Morning children attend from 8.30am to 11.30am; the afternoon session runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Families choose a morning or afternoon pattern across five sessions, rather than selecting individual hours.

EYFS learning includes language and communication, movement, social and emotional development, literacy and mathematics. These are foundations for taking part in learning as well as acquiring knowledge: expressing a need, understanding feelings and beginning to understand numbers all matter.

At the March 2023 inspection, staff in early years helped children understand number comparisons through the vocabulary of size. That connects mathematical ideas with language children can use. Early years teachers also received training that supported their explanations and subject knowledge.

Care and Support

Settling starts with contact between home and school. Rising 3s and Rising 5s clubs, home visits, welcome meetings and curriculum meetings form the early years transition programme. Where a child needs additional support, the SENCo can liaise with their previous setting and organise extra settling visits, resources or staff training. Familiarisation can therefore be adjusted to the child.

The class team takes responsibility for early years wellbeing, settling and recording progress. Within the SEND support cycle, teachers, teaching assistants, the key person and SENCo contribute to observing needs and planning support. Parents take part in discussions, and SEND plans are revisited each term and shared with families. This gives concerns a route into an agreed plan.

Physical care has specific provision too. The accessibility plan for 2022-2025 describes accessible nursery toilets with a changing area. It also describes a school hygiene suite equipped for changing, with staff training for those providing daily care.

In March 2023, children in early years received help to recognise and manage their emotions. For families concerned about development or additional needs, the class teacher and SENCo can be contacted through the school office.

Moving On to Reception

A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Montbelle’s Reception. The nursery application form makes that separation explicit. Families must make a separate school application through Royal Greenwich’s admissions route; the nursery application goes to the school.

Class changes have their own preparation. Children meet their next teacher and spend time in the next classroom during a class swap day. For those needing more preparation, extra visits, photographs or visual communication books can support the change. Familiarity with the next classroom is transition support, not an admissions entitlement.

Practical Information

Attendance pattern. The part-time model is five mornings or five afternoons. Some full-time places are also offered, so the relevant pattern matters when planning childcare around work.

The nursery application form asks for a preferred session and details of medical, educational or social needs. Sharing those needs at application gives staff information to use when preparing support.

Visits can be arranged by contacting the school. For enquiries, email admin@montbelle.org.uk or telephone 02088573909. The school’s 2026-2027 term schedule includes holidays and INSET closures, with three further INSET days still to be arranged. Families should keep those additional closures in mind when organising care.
