Nursery at Morden Mount Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Forest School, story play and daily language work give Morden Mount’s nursery its character. This is Foundation Stage 1 within the primary school on Lewisham Road, London. Children normally start in the term following their third birthday, subject to space, with an intake each term. Families can request a morning, afternoon or full day place.

The nursery has its own building, with outdoor areas used for early learning. Teachers and Early Years Practitioners make up the early years teaching team; the curriculum statement describes both as fully qualified. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 18 and 19 October 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play and structured teaching share the day. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning to communicate, manage feelings and move confidently with early number work, books, creativity and discovering how the world works. These are connected experiences: making something, explaining it and sharing equipment all contribute to learning.

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised supplies the nursery’s Foundations for Phonics approach. Daily practice centres on oral blending, stories and rhymes, giving children experience of joining spoken sounds together. The nursery also uses Foundations for a Love of reading stories. Books are part of the pleasure of the day, as well as preparation for reading.

The nursery curriculum map makes the practical work concrete. Children make props for pretend play and build homes linked to the three little pigs. Weighing with scales introduces comparison through objects children can handle. Forest School takes learning into the natural world, alongside the nursery building and outdoor learning areas. These activities give families a picture of learning through talking, making and exploring.

In October 2023, early years routines helped children cooperate, share resources and wait for a turn. Targeted language support was also part of early years provision. Social habits and communication receive attention alongside the activities themselves.

Care and Support

Settling starts with contact before the first session. Once a start date is agreed, families receive a confirmation letter and an invitation to visit the nursery. Members of the nursery team also arrange a home visit to meet the child and family in familiar surroundings.

Children entering nursery are assessed during their first six weeks to identify where extra help may be needed. Under the school’s SEND policy, families can discuss concerns with the class teacher, with appointments arranged through the office. For children with SEND, settling arrangements may be adapted; where other professionals are involved, a meeting brings together needs and strategies before the child starts.

Sharing support targets. The October 2023 inspection identified a school-wide weakness: individual SEND targets did not consistently reach every adult working with a pupil, so support could miss the precise need. Families whose child needs additional help should make target sharing part of their support discussions. The school’s Autumn 2025 policy assigns teachers responsibility for sharing individual needs and reviewing provision maps with parents at least once per term.

Moving On to Reception

A nursery place does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through the Royal Borough of Greenwich. For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026, with online applications through eAdmissions. That deadline belongs to a past admissions cycle.

Preparation for the move is a separate matter. Nursery children visit their next classroom before moving up, and parents attend a meeting about expectations, routines and the curriculum. Those contacts help families prepare for a different stage; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

Morning and afternoon half days sit alongside full day places. The nursery admissions procedure links a limited number of full day places to government 30-hour childcare funding. Families specify their preferred pattern when applying; an alternative may be offered if that pattern cannot be accommodated.

Contact the school office for the nursery application form or to arrange a visit. Completed forms can be emailed to info@mordenmount.greenwich.sch.uk. The office telephone is 020 8692 2920, with office hours of 8am to 4pm.
