Nursery at Sherington Primary School

Morning sessions and friendships with older children give Sherington’s nursery its own place in school life. Children usually join in the term following their third birthday, subject to space. The nursery occupies a separate building towards the bottom of the school site and uses an entrance on Sherington Road.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 17 and 18 October 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
The morning runs from 9am until noon. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), learning includes the everyday social skills children need in a group: working together, taking turns with others and handling powerful feelings. In October 2023, this teaching helped children understand the behaviour expected of them. These are practical foundations for participating in activities alongside other children.
A buddy arrangement pairs nursery children with Year 6 pupils for reading and personal, social and health education. Tuesday assemblies provide time for children to meet their partners, creating contact beyond their own class. There is a clear curriculum caveat, though. Early years activities were usually planned appropriately in October 2023, but some kept children occupied with too little attention to the intended learning. Families should distinguish purposeful activity from what an activity actually teaches.
Starting school includes home visits, meetings to welcome families and sessions explaining the early years curriculum. For children with SEND, the Inclusion Manager can liaise with an earlier setting and organise a Team Around the Child meeting. Extra familiarisation visits, suitable resources and staff training can be arranged where needed. This allows preparation to begin before the child starts, rather than leaving adjustments until difficulties emerge.
Early years staff identified developmental needs effectively in October 2023 and provided prompt support for children and families, helping address many early difficulties. Alongside that positive finding, the school-wide inspection identified inconsistent classroom support for pupils with SEND and required further staff training. That concern should inform conversations about how support will match a child’s existing understanding.
The nursery has a class teacher whose responsibilities also include Forest School, environmental awareness and travel planning. Across the school, SEND plans are shared with parents and reviewed each term. Parents therefore have a recurring opportunity to discuss targets and support with staff.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Sherington. Families must make a separate application through the local authority, with eAdmissions given as the online route. For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026; that cycle has passed.
Preparation for a new class is a separate matter. The school’s transition arrangements include children meeting their next teacher and spending time in their next classroom on class swop day. Where needed, additional classroom visits, photo journals or visual communication books can support children with SEND. Familiarity helps prepare a child for change, but it does not secure admission.
The session pattern is 15 hours during term time, with mornings from 9am to noon. Families need to plan around a midday finish and school holidays. The nursery entrance is on Sherington Road, separate from the main school entrance on Wyndcliff Road.
Nursery applications are handled by the school through its linked Google Form and can be submitted after a child’s second birthday. General enquiries can go to sao@sherington.greenwich.sch.uk or 020 8858 5497. Nursery enrolment and the later Reception application require separate action.
