Nursery at South Rise Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
A change of operator defines the nursery at South Rise: Top Tots Day Care took over delivery from September 2026. South Rise itself no longer runs the provision. For families choosing care on this school site, that distinction matters more than the school’s wider identity.
The nursery is at South Rise Primary School on Brewery Road in Plumstead. Before the handover, children could join in the term following their third birthday, with both part-time and full-time places offered. Those arrangements describe the school-run provision before the change of operator.
Outdoor learning was a distinctive part of South Rise’s nursery model. Nursery children had Forest School each week in the school’s own wooded area, led by a trained member of school staff. This gave outdoor learning a regular place in the week, with a physical setting beyond the classroom.
The school’s early years curriculum uses the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent language, its approach combines exploring and trying things, sustaining attention when something proves difficult, and developing ideas about how to tackle a task. Learning involves persistence as well as discovery.
Communication receives explicit attention through planned vocabulary teaching. Physical development and emotional development sit alongside language, while literacy, mathematics, creative expression and understanding the world broaden the learning. The school also includes systematic teaching of number sense, phonics and handwriting within early years, with targeted support intended to address learning gaps. These features describe South Rise’s educational approach before the nursery handover.
South Rise’s school support structure includes specialist teaching assistants, learning mentors and an Early Years ELSA role. Its pastoral team includes two ELSA Learning Mentors and a family support worker. Emotion coaching is used to help children recognise feelings, with a restorative approach to resolving conflict.
For children needing additional help, the school uses a cycle of assessing needs, planning support, putting it into practice and reviewing progress. Parents participate in decisions about that support. Possible adaptations include visual timetables, individual timetables and specialist equipment; these are options matched to need, rather than a fixed package for every child.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at South Rise. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Applications for a September school start are made online through Royal Borough of Greenwich Admissions.
South Rise’s school transition approach includes meeting new teachers and visiting new classrooms as needed. Additional help can involve photographs, social stories, transition packs or extra visits. These measures support a child through change; they do not secure admission.
Before the operator change, the school’s nursery timetable had a morning session from 8.30am to 11.30am and an afternoon session from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Some full-time places were also offered. Families should treat these as the school-run arrangements preceding the September 2026 handover.
The school office is the enquiry route for South Rise: telephone 020 8855 1050 or email southrise@compassps.uk. A contact form also sends queries to the office team. Reception admission and nursery care remain separate decisions, even though both concern the same school site.
