In November 2022, stories, songs and rhymes gave Wingfield’s nursery a clear starting point: helping children develop an appetite for reading. This is the nursery provision within Wingfield Primary School, on Ensign Street in Kidbrooke, rather than a separate childcare setting.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 9 and 10 November 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. The nursery-specific detail gives parents something more tangible than a grade: staff used shared reading and familiar language activities to prepare children to enjoy books.
At the November 2022 inspection, nursery staff used storytelling, singing and rhymes to build children’s enthusiasm for reading. These activities introduce the pleasures of reading through listening and participation. For a child starting nursery, that means preparation for reading begins with language and shared enjoyment.
The wider early years learning also includes number work. In November 2022, children practised counting in both directions to develop their understanding of subtraction and addition. The connection matters: counting was being used to build mathematical understanding, rather than simply reciting a sequence.
Exploration has an educational purpose, too. Children in early years developed confidence and curiosity about their surroundings, while teaching built their knowledge across the areas of learning. Taken together, the examples show early education reaching beyond books to numbers and understanding the world.
Learning how to take part in the day is itself part of the teaching. In November 2022, early years children learned to respond to instructions and follow routines. For families, this is a practical aspect of starting school life: children are supported to understand what is expected as well as what they are learning.
Safety also enters the curriculum through concrete examples. Around Bonfire Night during that inspection, early years children learned about firework safety. That connects a seasonal event with understanding how to stay safe.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Wingfield. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the applicable deadline. Treat the nursery decision and the Reception application as two separate steps when planning your child’s education.
