Conversation is a defining feature of the early years at Thomas Fairchild: adults use everyday exchanges to build children’s language and understanding. The nursery accepts applications for children aged three and forms part of the school’s early-years provision on Forston Street in Hoxton.
Ofsted graded the early-years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 26 and 27 September 2023. That judgement covers the early-years phase within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum develops children across seven areas of learning and development. Here, the September 2023 findings describe foundations that support both learning and social development. For a parent, the emphasis is on children gaining the skills to participate and understand, alongside academic learning.
Adult conversation does real work. Staff use opportunities to talk with children to extend what they understand and how they express themselves. This makes ordinary interactions part of learning, rather than reserving language development for a separate activity. In September 2023, children were developing socially and academically in an environment designed to stimulate their learning.
Settling had gone well in September 2023: early-years children had adjusted promptly and were prepared to engage in learning. That is a useful, dated indication of how children were managing the change into school life.
For additional needs, the school’s support process starts with discussion between parents and the class teacher. Its 2025/26 SEND Information Report includes discussing the child’s two-year-old check where they are in the early-years phase. An agreed review period of six to eight weeks can lead to formal support through My Educational Targets. Parents help shape those targets, giving home experience a place in decisions about support.
Communication for families receiving SEND support can include handover chats, communication books and meetings with the teacher or SENCO. The school building has a lift serving each floor, a practical feature for families with mobility needs.
School meals are cooked on site from fresh ingredients, with vegetarian choices. Packed lunches are also accepted, with nuts and sesame excluded. Breakfast Club provides breakfast before activities; children attending Our Space after school have a hot or cold snack option.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through Hackney Education, including when their child already attends the nursery. Treat that application as a separate task and follow the deadline for the relevant intake.
For children with SEND, the school’s transition arrangements include social stories or transition books, visual countdowns and meetings involving families and staff. These help children anticipate change. They support the move itself and do not confer an admissions advantage.
Funded childcare is offered through 15-hour provision from age three, with 30 hours dependent on eligibility. Paid top-up hours and charged wraparound care are also offered; ask the school for current charges.
Breakfast Club runs from 8am to 9am and admits nursery children on a first-come basis, with a waiting list. Our Space runs on weekdays during term time, from 3:30pm to 6pm. That extends the practical options for working or studying parents.
Contact the office on 020 7253 9469 or tfoffice@newwavefederation.co.uk for nursery enquiries and tour bookings. Visitors use the Forston Street entrance during the school day. There is no on-site car park, so plan travel accordingly.
