Hatching chicks, a school tortoise and trips prompted by children's interests gave Wentworth's nursery day a distinctive character at the April 2023 inspection. On Cassland Road in Hackney, this nursery school serves children aged two to five. Inspectors described learning through things children could watch, handle and care for, making new ideas concrete.
At the April 2023 inspection, 96 children were on roll; that is a historical headcount, rather than a measure of places available today. Ofsted's findings from 26 April 2023 described knowledgeable early years staff, ambitious learning and children who felt secure. The detail matters more than a headline: conversation, books and purposeful play connected across the day observed.
At the April 2023 inspection, children's interests helped shape a carefully sequenced curriculum. Activities returned to important ideas and then developed them further, giving children opportunities to practise and use their learning. Children sustained their attention during independent play, activities with friends and sessions directed by adults. That gave the day room for both personal exploration and shared learning.
Language received deliberate attention in April 2023. Adults demonstrated complete sentences, offered prompts to help children begin speaking, and used visual cues to explain unfamiliar ideas. Vocabulary stretched beyond everyday labels: incubator and hibernate were examples children used in their conversations. These words connected language with experiences children could understand, such as watching chicks hatch.
In April 2023, daily stories introduced children to books, while songs and rhymes helped them practise number concepts. A book library encouraged reading at home, extending that connection beyond nursery. Adults also used conversations to uncover misunderstandings and decide what each child should learn next, so teaching responded to individual development.
Experiences reached beyond the classroom at the April 2023 inspection. Examples included shopping locally for cooking ingredients, café outings and an interest-led trip to London City Airport. Climbing equipment gave children opportunities to practise managing risk. Caring for Fred, the tortoise, and helping prepare and clear lunch gave responsibility a practical form.
Relationships supported both security and learning at the April 2023 inspection. Staff knew children closely, and experiences designed to capture their curiosity also helped them settle into nursery. Caring for animals gave children a concrete way to practise kindness; a calm atmosphere supported concentration and considerate behaviour.
At the April 2023 inspection, children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) received support to participate in the curriculum and nursery life alongside their peers. Staff understood families' circumstances as well as children's needs. For parents, the important point is participation: support enabled children to join the learning taking place around them.
Safeguarding was effective at the April 2023 inspection. Staff followed up concerns promptly, received regular training and understood how to report worries. Daily resource and equipment checks, suitable supervision and governors' scrutiny added practical safeguards. Staff training also supported practitioners in their roles.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal Reception admissions route and meet its deadline.
Educational preparation is a separate matter. In April 2023, children were well prepared for primary school: opportunities to develop spoken language, enjoy books and take responsibility contributed to that preparation. Readiness to move on should not be confused with an entitlement to a particular school place.
Breakfast and after-school clubs were recorded in April 2023, providing care around the nursery day. Families considering that arrangement should treat the clubs as a dated feature of the provision. Wentworth's address is Cassland Road, Hackney, London E9 5BY.
The current school record gives an age range of two to five.
