Nursery at Brackenbury Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Write Dance, helicopter stories and Wiggle Waggle give Brackenbury’s nursery its character: early learning starts with movement, conversation and play. The nursery classroom occupies a separate, single-storey building on the school’s Hammersmith site. Children can join in the term following their third birthday, with up to 26 places split between morning attendance and full-time provision.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 13 and 14 December 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Adult-led learning alternates with time for children to explore activities independently. Small groups give staff opportunities to check understanding and adjust their support. A different theme each half term supplies a starting point, while children’s interests can change the direction of learning. There is room for their own ideas.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning and development, including communication, physical skills and relationships alongside early mathematics and literacy. Brackenbury gives language and social development particular attention. Wiggle Waggle and helicopter stories provide opportunities to practise vocabulary; drama, role-play and library books bring stories into the day. Art includes group teaching and opportunities to experiment with materials indoors and outside.

Nursery children attend Write Dance each week, alongside mark-making with a purpose, such as messages or shopping lists. Mathematics uses White Rose progression, moving from practical objects to pictures and then abstract ideas. Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) provides the school’s phonics programme, with Nursery concentrating on Phase 1: noticing sounds and developing speaking and listening before formal sound-to-letter teaching. This makes the nursery emphasis clear. Listening and communication come first.

Care and Support

Contact with families begins through home visits and open days. Parent meetings, workshops and curriculum letters every half term help parents understand the learning and support it at home. In December 2022, collaboration between early years teachers and support staff helped children participate in activities.

For additional needs, the class teacher is the first contact, with the SENCO involved in planning support. The school’s SEND information report lists WELLCOM for early years speech and language, and Attention Autism for early years and Key Stage 1. These are support options matched to need, rather than activities promised to every nursery child.

For families considering school meals, the August 2026 to February 2027 menu lists a halal option on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through eAdmissions, with Hammersmith and Fulham handling Reception admissions. Choosing the nursery therefore leaves a further admissions decision ahead.

Transition support has a different purpose. The SEND policy describes liaison with Brackenbury Nursery and transferring information about identified needs so the receiving teacher and SENCO can plan support. Staff handovers and time with new adults also form part of the school’s approach to changing classes. These arrangements support continuity; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

Morning places cover 15 hours, while full-time places are described as 30 hours. Eligible families should supply their government funding code with the nursery application. Families seeking full-time attendance without eligibility for that funding can discuss paid top-up places with the office.

Breakfast club accepts nursery children from 8am and is booked through School Gateway. Aktiva after-school care can extend attendance until 6pm; both services carry charges. Ask the school for current charges when arranging these options.

Nursery application forms are obtained from, and returned to, the school office. Contact admin@brackenbury.lbhf.sch.uk or 020 8743 3074. For holiday planning, check the school’s term calendar and INSET dates, and follow newsletter updates because dates can change.
