Nursery at Ambler Primary School and Children's Centre

Conversation and clear routines give Ambler’s nursery its character. Adults build children’s vocabulary through exchanges across the day, while expectations for behaviour begin in Nursery. These are practical foundations for joining in, sharing and making themselves understood.
The nursery belongs to Ambler Primary School and Children's Centre on Blackstock Road in Finsbury Park. Its Children’s Centre provides childcare and early education for ages six months to five years, with Baby, Toddler and Nursery Rooms. Families can choose term-time attendance or an all-year arrangement. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 19 and 20 November 2024; this is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
Language development is a clear strength of the early years curriculum. In November 2024, adults used sustained conversation to help children learn new vocabulary and develop their speaking skills. Learning therefore includes the exchanges between adults and children throughout the day, giving children repeated opportunities to practise expressing themselves.
Routines make group learning manageable. Expectations start in Nursery, and children showed curiosity, shared with others and maintained their attention during activities. For a parent choosing a first group setting, that combination matters: children are learning how to participate alongside others as well as developing their own interests.
The Baby, Toddler and Nursery Rooms form the Centre’s indoor provision. Monthly tours include these rooms and a chance to meet the team, making them a useful way to see the spaces your child would use.
Relationships begin early. In November 2024, strong trust between children and staff was established from the Nursery Year. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities also made very strong progress from the early years onwards.
The Council’s September 2023 charging policy provides a settling period of one consecutive Monday-to-Friday week, without a childcare charge, for two-, three- and five-day places. Its attendance policy makes communication with the key person part of supporting regular attendance. That gives families a contact for discussing difficulties with their child’s attendance and routines.
Meals have different charging rules according to age and attendance. Under the September 2023 policy, lunch is included in applicable childcare charges for under-threes. For children receiving funded early education, from the term after their third birthday, term-time lunch carries no charge but holiday lunch is charged when attended. Nappies and wipes fall outside childcare charges. These distinctions matter when comparing funded hours with the full care arrangement.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives priority under Islington’s community-school admission criteria. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority. Islington residents use the London e-Admissions portal.
Places are allocated using the published criteria, including looked-after status, siblings, exceptional social or medical needs and distance. For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle has passed; families planning a later start should follow the relevant application cycle rather than treating nursery registration as a school application.
Two-day and three-day places run from 8am to 6pm, using fixed patterns at either end of the week. Five-day attendance can be 8am to 6pm throughout the year, or 9am to 3pm during term time for eligible three- and four-year-olds. Funded term-time places also include a two-and-a-half-day pattern, with Wednesday as the shorter day. Match the offered pattern to your working week before applying.
Funding options include 30 hours for eligible working families from the term after a child turns nine months, universal 15-hour provision for three- and four-year-olds, and an eligibility-dependent 20-hour stretched offer over 49 weeks. Ask the Centre for current charges when arranging additional childcare.
