Nursery at Yerbury Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

New words, shared play and learning to cooperate give Yerbury’s early years their character. The nursery caters for three- and four-year-olds within Yerbury Primary School, with children joining after their third birthday at autumn or spring entry points, subject to places. It operates in term time, with morning, afternoon and full-time options.

A separate, single-storey nursery building gives the provision its own physical space within the school site. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding following its 7 and 8 February 2023 inspection. That judgement covers early years within the school.

The Nursery Day

Communication takes a central role in learning. In February 2023, early years teaching developed children’s language through repeated opportunities to try unfamiliar vocabulary and phrases. For a young child, that means practising how to put ideas into words, alongside learning how to listen and respond.

The Early Years Foundation Stage covers children’s learning and development across different areas. Teaching here builds understanding across those areas, while children also learn to work together and respond to instructions. These social skills help them participate in classroom activities with other children.

Lunch starts shortly before noon for nursery children. A hot school meal is available free to every child; packed lunches are also an option. Children eating a packed lunch use the dining hall alongside classmates, making mealtimes a shared part of the day.

Care and Support

Managing feelings is part of the early years learning described in February 2023. Adults helped children communicate their emotions and handle them, alongside developing cooperation. This gives everyday social learning a practical purpose: helping children take part in a group.

Settling has a defined place in the Islington charging policy linked by the school. It provides an initial week, running consecutively from Monday to Friday, with no charge for settling. Yerbury also uses phased entry for its nursery intakes, so the start is staged.

For children with identified special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), the school works with families and relevant partners before entry to understand their needs. Its Assess, Plan, Do, Review process organises support around assessment, planning, action and checking progress. Parents of children receiving SEN support get more frequent feedback; home-school books are sometimes used for daily communication.

Physical access has useful specifics. The nursery classrooms are at ground level, and the site’s three playgrounds are level with one another and step free. Families considering mobility needs can distinguish the nursery’s layout from the main school’s upper floors.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the local authority where their child lives, using London e-Admissions. Yerbury’s admissions page gives 15 January 2027 as the deadline for September 2027 entry.

Islington’s community-school arrangements for the 2026 entry cycle give priority to looked-after and previously looked-after children, then siblings, exceptional social or medical needs, and distance. Nursery attendance is not a priority criterion in those arrangements. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 9.00am to noon; afternoons run from 12.20pm to 3.20pm. Full-time attendance runs from 9.00am to 3.20pm. Indicate the preferred pattern on the nursery application form. Collection at noon is through the school office, while nursery dismissal at 3.20pm is from its playground.

All three- and four-year-olds can access 15 funded hours each week in term time from the term after their third birthday, with funding arranged by the school. Eligible working families can access up to 30 hours; full-time funded offers remain provisional until the school validates the eligibility code. Families who do not qualify can apply to purchase the additional 15 hours. Ask the school for current charges.

The linked charging policy allows optional charges for extras connected with funded hours, including consumables and additional services; these cannot be a condition of taking a place. Parents supply care products such as wipes and suncream. The school’s hot-meal offer is free.

Apply directly to Yerbury using its nursery form. Enquiries go to admin@yerbury.islington.sch.uk or 020 7272 6580, and school tours can be booked through the admissions page. Yerbury has no school uniform.
